Course overview

Corporate trainers are increasingly expected to deliver workshops, onboarding, systems training and leadership programmes through virtual classrooms without losing the interaction, practice and accountability of face-to-face delivery. Yet many experienced facilitators transfer classroom slides directly into Teams or Zoom, resulting in passive audiences, uneven participation, weak application and limited evidence of learning. This course addresses the operational challenge of running virtual sessions that are structured, inclusive, technically reliable and tied to business performance.

Participants learn to design and facilitate live virtual learning events using a deliberate engagement architecture: short input cycles, polls, chat prompts, annotation, breakout rooms, collaborative boards, demonstrations and coached practice. They build facilitator run sheets, participant workbooks, breakout instructions, timing plans and contingency procedures. The course also covers virtual presence, questioning techniques, managing difficult behaviours online, accessibility, hybrid-session considerations and measurement methods that connect learner activity to post-course workplace application.

Teaching is highly practical. Participants facilitate short virtual modules, receive structured peer and instructor feedback, troubleshoot realistic platform failures and redesign an existing classroom activity for live online delivery. By the end of the week, each participant leaves with a ready-to-use virtual training delivery pack: a 60-minute session plan, platform configuration checklist, interaction plan, breakout-room design, facilitator script, participant communications and an evaluation approach for a real corporate programme.

This intermediate-to-advanced course is best suited to corporate trainers, learning facilitators and L&D professionals who already understand their subject matter and need a repeatable method for delivering high-value live online learning to dispersed employee groups.

Who should attend

  • Corporate Trainers — who need to deliver engaging live online programmes for dispersed employee groups
  • Learning and Development Specialists — who convert internal learning programmes into scalable virtual events
  • Technical Trainers — who must teach systems, processes or products through demonstrations and coached online practice
  • Leadership Development Facilitators — who need to create psychologically safe discussion and peer learning in virtual cohorts
  • HR Training Managers — who set quality standards and support facilitators delivering enterprise learning portfolios
  • Subject Matter Experts — who are asked to lead virtual workshops and need a facilitation method beyond presentation slides

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have prior experience delivering training, facilitating meetings or leading workshops, and should be comfortable explaining a defined business topic to adult learners. Familiarity with basic virtual meeting actions—joining a meeting, sharing a screen, using chat and managing files—is assumed. Bring a laptop with reliable internet access and, ideally, one existing classroom or virtual session that you can redesign during the course. Prior instructional-design certification, video-production experience, coding, learning-management-system administration and advanced platform configuration are not required. Complete beginners to facilitation should first gain foundational training-design and classroom-delivery experience.

Training methodology

The course combines instructor-led demonstrations with repeated virtual facilitation practice. Participants work in Teams or Zoom as both learners and facilitators, testing polls, chat sequences, annotation, breakouts and shared boards before analysing what produced useful learner evidence. Case work addresses low engagement, technical failures, sensitive discussions and hybrid participation. Small groups redesign real training activities, then run short segments for peer observation using a delivery rubric. The final day is devoted to refining an individual session pack and planning its workplace pilot.

Course outline

Day 1: Virtual classroom architecture and facilitator presence

  • Differences between classroom facilitation and synchronous virtual delivery
  • The 10-minute engagement cycle for live online sessions
  • Virtual facilitator presence through voice, camera framing and attention control
  • Learner journey mapping from joining instructions to post-session follow-up
  • Microsoft Teams and Zoom meeting controls for trainers
  • Psychological safety and participation agreements for virtual cohorts
  • Virtual session risk assessment and technical contingency planning

Workshop: Participants audit a current training session and produce a learner journey map with risks, interaction points and facilitator actions.

Day 2: Designing interaction, practice and learner evidence

  • Poll design for prior knowledge checks and decision-based learning
  • Chat choreography using prompts, response formats and synthesis techniques
  • Annotation and whiteboard methods for collective sense-making
  • Miro board templates for sorting, mapping and prioritisation activities
  • Converting presentation content into retrieval, decision and practice tasks
  • Questioning ladders for checking understanding and challenging assumptions
  • Real-time learner evidence using polls, chat transcripts and observed outputs

Workshop: Participants redesign a 20-minute slide-led segment into a virtual interaction sequence and facilitate it for peer feedback.

Day 3: Breakout rooms and collaborative virtual practice

  • Breakout-room task design using purpose, process, product and timebox
  • Group roles for virtual collaboration including chair, recorder and reporter
  • Writing self-contained breakout instructions and digital workspaces
  • Facilitator movement between rooms and intervention decision rules
  • Debrief models that connect group outputs to business application
  • Managing uneven participation and social loafing in virtual groups
  • Hybrid breakout considerations for room-based and remote participants

Workshop: Teams design, configure and run a breakout activity in which participants produce a Miro-based business recommendation and debrief it.

Day 4: Facilitating difficult moments and accessible delivery

  • Diagnosing silence, multitasking and passive attendance in live sessions
  • Intervention scripts for dominant voices, side conversations and resistance
  • Managing technical failure including audio loss, access problems and platform outages

Frequently asked questions

No. You should be able to join meetings, share a screen and use basic chat functions. The course teaches the trainer-specific use of polls, breakouts, annotation, participant management and contingency setup.

Yes, a laptop with reliable internet, camera and headset is strongly recommended for the live practice sessions. Bringing an existing classroom workshop, onboarding module or technical-training topic will make the final delivery pack directly usable.

It is designed for experienced corporate trainers, L&D practitioners, technical trainers and subject matter experts who already facilitate or are about to facilitate live online sessions. It is not primarily a course on e-learning authoring or learning management system administration.

Presentation-skills courses focus mainly on speaking, message structure and personal delivery. This course focuses on operating a live virtual learning environment: interaction design, platform controls, breakouts, learner evidence, accessibility and technical recovery.

You will use the run-sheet template, engagement-cycle model, breakout design method and contingency checklist in your next virtual programme. The final application plan identifies a specific session to pilot, the evidence to collect and the follow-up actions needed.

You leave with a reviewed 60-minute virtual session plan, facilitator script, interaction map, breakout-room instructions, participant communications and evaluation approach. These materials are built around a real corporate topic rather than a generic training example.
