Course overview
VMware administrators are expected to provision virtual machines quickly, maintain service availability, control capacity and respond confidently to incidents across shared compute, storage and network resources. Without a sound operating model for vCenter Server, ESXi hosts, clusters and datastores, routine changes can introduce configuration drift, performance bottlenecks or avoidable downtime. This five-day course gives IT professionals a practical foundation for administering a vSphere environment safely and consistently.
Participants work through the core administration tasks performed in VMware vSphere 8: deploying and configuring ESXi hosts, managing vCenter Server inventory, creating virtual machines and templates, configuring virtual networking, administering shared storage and building clusters with vSphere High Availability and Distributed Resource Scheduler. The course also covers host lifecycle management, permissions, monitoring, alarm configuration, snapshots, resource controls and structured troubleshooting. Participants learn to interpret host, VM and datastore conditions before making operational changes.
Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by guided labs in a realistic vSphere environment. Participants configure an ESXi host, build a vCenter inventory, provision workloads, create a cluster and investigate simulated operational faults. They leave with a documented vSphere administration runbook containing configuration decisions, provisioning steps, monitoring checks, recovery actions and a 30-day application plan for their own environment. A certificate of completion is awarded.
The course suits infrastructure professionals moving into VMware administration, as well as experienced support staff who need a more structured approach to operating vSphere clusters. Managers can use it to establish consistent administration practices across teams responsible for virtual infrastructure.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable using a Windows or Linux desktop, working with IP addresses, DNS and basic network concepts such as VLANs and default gateways. Familiarity with server hardware, storage terminology such as LUN and datastore, and common operating-system administration tasks is helpful. Prior VMware experience is not required; the course starts with the ESXi and vCenter Server architecture before progressing to cluster operations. Participants do not need to bring a production vSphere environment, hold a VMware certification or write scripts. Complete beginners should expect a technically hands-on week and should review basic TCP/IP concepts beforehand.
Training methodology
The course combines short instructor-led explanations with live configuration demonstrations in VMware vSphere 8. Each participant completes guided lab tasks in the vSphere Client, including host onboarding, VM deployment, network and datastore configuration, cluster setup and alarm investigation. Scenario-based exercises introduce failed hosts, resource contention and provisioning requests so that participants practise operational decisions rather than only clicking through features. Facilitated peer reviews compare configuration choices, and the final session converts lab learning into a vSphere administration runbook and workplace application plan.
Course outline
Day 1: vSphere architecture and host administration
- VMware vSphere 8 architecture: ESXi, vCenter Server, clusters and datastores
- vSphere Client navigation, inventory hierarchy and object relationships
- ESXi installation options and host hardware compatibility considerations
- ESXi management network configuration with DNS, NTP and VMkernel adapters
- Adding ESXi hosts to vCenter Server and applying host profiles
- Host security controls including lockdown mode, services and certificate awareness
- Roles, permissions and least-privilege access in vCenter Server
Workshop: Participants add and configure an ESXi host in a vCenter inventory, assign role-based access and record the build steps in their runbook.
Day 2: Virtual machines, templates and resource control
- Virtual machine hardware versions and guest operating system compatibility
- VM provisioning workflows using new VMs, clones and templates
- Virtual CPU, memory, disk controller and virtual NIC configuration
- VMware Tools installation and guest customisation specifications
- Virtual machine snapshots, consolidation and snapshot risk controls
- Resource pools, shares, reservations and limits
- Tags, custom attributes and naming standards for VM governance
Workshop: Participants deploy a standardised application VM from a template, apply tags and resource controls, and document its provisioning checklist.
Day 3: Virtual networking and storage administration
- Standard switches, distributed switches and port group design
- Uplinks, NIC teaming, load-balancing policies and failover order
- VLAN tagging and network segmentation for management and workload traffic
- VMkernel services for management, vMotion, storage and fault tolerance
- VMFS datastore creation, expansion and datastore browser operations
- NFS datastore configuration and storage connectivity requirements
- Storage multipathing, path policies and virtual disk placement
Workshop: Participants configure segmented VM and VMkernel networks, attach shared storage, create a datastore and validate path redundancy.
Day 4: Clusters, availability and lifecycle operations
- Cluster design principles for compute capacity, redundancy and maintenance
- vSphere High Availability configuration and host failure response
- Admission control policies and slot-based capacity planning
- Distributed Resource Scheduler automation levels and migration thresholds
- VM-Host affinity rules and workload placement controls
- vMotion requirements and live migration workflows
- vSphere Lifecycle Manager baselines, images and remediation planning
Workshop: Participants build a cluster, configure HA and DRS policies, migrate a running VM and prepare a lifecycle remediation plan.
Day 5: Monitoring, troubleshooting and operational governance
- vCenter tasks, events and logs for operational investigation
- Performance charts for CPU, memory, disk latency and network throughput
- Alarm definitions, thresholds, actions and notification design
- Troubleshooting VM power-on, connectivity and datastore-access failures
- Host maintenance mode, evacuation options and planned-change procedures
- Capacity review using utilisation trends and resource allocation data
- vSphere administration runbooks, escalation paths and daily health checks
Workshop: Participants resolve a simulated vSphere incident and produce a completed operations runbook with monitoring, recovery and escalation procedures.
