Course overview

Mining sites must provide safe water supplies, hygienic sanitation and effective wastewater controls across camps, workshops, processing areas and surrounding communities. Failures can trigger diarrhoeal disease outbreaks, worker absenteeism, regulatory breaches, contaminated surface water or groundwater, and conflict with host communities competing for limited water resources. Environmental, HSE and community teams need practical ways to assess risks and operate water and sanitation systems in conditions shaped by remote locations, variable workforce numbers, dust, heavy rainfall, water scarcity and mine-life changes.

This course equips participants to plan, assess and improve water and sanitation services for mining operations. Participants learn to map site water uses; estimate potable-water and sanitation demand; conduct sanitary inspections; select source protection, treatment, storage and distribution measures; and manage wastewater, septage and sludge safely. The programme connects WASH risk assessment with mining water balances, environmental monitoring, emergency preparedness, contractor management and community engagement. It also applies the IFC Environmental, Health, and Safety Guidelines for Mining, ISO 14046 concepts and relevant public-health standards to operational decisions.

Teaching combines instructor-led technical sessions with a realistic mine-site case study, calculations, field-style inspection tools and facilitated design reviews. Working in teams, participants build a Water and Sanitation Improvement Plan for a fictional mining operation, including a risk register, service-level targets, monitoring indicators, corrective actions and an implementation schedule. This is a working document that can be adapted for a participant's own camp, mine village, processing plant or exploration project.

The course is suited to professionals who coordinate site services, water management, environmental performance, health protection or community infrastructure. Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable reading basic site plans, following simple flow and volume calculations, and discussing routine environmental or HSE controls. Familiarity with a mining camp, industrial site, construction project or community water programme is helpful but not essential. Participants should bring examples of their site's water sources, camp population, water-quality results or sanitation issues if available. No prior hydraulic-modelling experience, laboratory certification, engineering degree, GIS expertise or advanced knowledge of WHO or IFC guidance is required. Complete beginners should expect to work with practical calculations, inspection templates and operational scenarios.

Training methodology

The programme uses short instructor-led inputs followed by applied mine-site tasks. Participants interpret camp layouts, calculate demand for changing shift populations, complete sanitary inspection checklists, review water-quality data and select controls for boreholes, tanks, chlorination systems, toilets and wastewater units. A running case study follows a remote mine with a growing workforce and community water concerns. Teams challenge each other's proposed controls in design-review sessions, then complete an end-of-course application plan identifying actions, owners, budgets, monitoring indicators and escalation routes for their own operation.

Day 1: Mining WASH risks, obligations and service levels

Day 2: Water supply, treatment and distribution

Day 3: Sanitation, wastewater and faecal-sludge management

  • Gender, accessibility, privacy, lighting and safeguarding requirements for sanitation facilities
  • Blackwater, greywater, kitchen wastewater and workshop-effluent segregation

Workshop: Participants compare three sanitation and wastewater options for a water-scarce mine site and prepare a justified option-selection matrix.

Day 4: Monitoring, incident response and community interface
