Course overview
Aircraft turnarounds depend on tightly coordinated work around moving vehicles, live aircraft, fuel, baggage systems, cargo equipment and time-critical handovers. In this environment, a missed exclusion zone, weak marshalling control, poorly planned pushback, unreported fatigue issue or incomplete contractor briefing can lead to injury, aircraft damage, delayed departures and regulator scrutiny. This course equips aviation ground operations professionals to identify and control the operational risks that arise on the ramp, in baggage and cargo areas, during aircraft servicing, and across contractor-led activities.
Participants work through aviation-specific occupational health and safety methods rather than generic workplace safety theory. They learn to conduct task-based risk assessments, apply the hierarchy of controls, build safe systems of work, investigate ramp incidents, manage ground support equipment hazards, control vehicle and pedestrian movements, and address fatigue, manual handling, hazardous substances and emergency response. The programme also covers how ICAO safety-management principles, ISO 45001 requirements and IATA ground-handling guidance translate into practical controls at station and shift level.
Instructor-led workshops use realistic turnaround, baggage-handling, fuelling-adjacent and GSE incident scenarios. Participants analyse evidence, map hazards, establish controls, write corrective actions and test escalation decisions with peers. Each participant leaves with an aviation ground operations safety improvement pack: a task risk assessment, bow-tie control map, incident investigation report, safety briefing template and 90-day action plan ready to adapt for their operation.
The course is suited to experienced ground operations, safety and supervisory personnel who need to strengthen control of frontline aviation hazards while demonstrating sound, documented safety-management practice to airport authorities, airline clients and regulators.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical exposure to aviation ground operations, airport airside activity, ground handling, ramp supervision or occupational health and safety responsibilities. They should be familiar with common terms such as turnaround, GSE, FOD, marshalling, pushback, PPE, incident reporting and risk assessment. Experience completing basic hazard reports or toolbox talks is useful, but formal safety qualifications are not required. Participants do not need prior knowledge of ISO 45001, bow-tie analysis or ICAO safety-management documentation; these are taught and applied during the course. A laptop with spreadsheet and document-editing access is recommended for workshops.
Training methodology
The programme combines instructor-led technical sessions with facilitated analysis of aviation ground-operation cases. Participants work in small groups on turnaround risk assessments, airside vehicle segregation plans, GSE control checks and incident evidence packs. The instructor demonstrates how to convert operational observations into documented controls using risk matrices, bow-tie diagrams and corrective-action registers. Daily workshops require participants to make supervisory decisions under realistic time and coordination pressures. On the final day, each participant consolidates the course outputs into a station- or department-relevant 90-day safety improvement plan.

Day 1: Aviation ground safety systems and operational risk

- ISO 45001 worker participation, consultation and operational-control requirements

- Hazard identification methods for dynamic aircraft turnaround tasks
- Risk-matrix calibration using likelihood, exposure, consequence and control effectiveness
Workshop: Participants build a hazard register and prioritised risk matrix for a delayed aircraft turnaround involving several ground teams.
Day 2: Ramp, vehicle and ground support equipment controls
- Ramp zoning, aircraft approach boundaries and equipment staging controls
- Airside vehicle-pedestrian segregation and reversing-risk management
- Marshaller, wing-walker and headset communication controls during aircraft movements
- Ground support equipment pre-use inspection and defect-reporting processes
- Chocking, brake isolation, immobilisation and hazardous-energy control principles
- Foreign object debris prevention and ramp housekeeping inspections
- Weather, lighting and low-visibility adjustments to ramp work controls

Day 3: Safe work design for people and contractors
- Task-based risk assessment and job safety analysis for ground-handling activities
- Hierarchy-of-controls decisions for manual handling, noise, vibration and repetitive work
- Fatigue-risk indicators, rostering pressures and fit-for-duty escalation
- PPE selection limitations and verification in ramp environments
- Safe systems of work for baggage loading, cargo handling and aircraft servicing
- Contractor induction, competence verification and permit-to-work interfaces
- Pre-task briefings, toolbox talks and closed-loop communication methods
Workshop: Participants write a safe system of work and pre-task briefing for baggage loading during a short turnaround with agency staff.
Day 4: Incident investigation and safety assurance
- Immediate response priorities following injury, aircraft damage or near-miss events
- Evidence preservation, witness interviewing and event-timeline reconstruction
- Causal analysis using the five whys, barrier analysis and contributing-factor mapping
- Bow-tie analysis of jet blast, vehicle strike or aircraft-contact hazards
- Corrective-action design using control owners, due dates and effectiveness measures
- Leading and lagging safety indicators for station and ramp performance
- Management review, safety reporting and escalation of unresolved operational risks
Workshop: Participants investigate a simulated aircraft ground-damage event and produce an evidence-based corrective-action register.
Day 5: Emergency readiness and local safety improvement
