Course overview

PMOs are often asked to provide reliable portfolio oversight while delivery teams work through Scrum, Kanban, hybrid delivery models, changing priorities and decentralised decision-making. Traditional governance based on fixed stage gates, detailed upfront plans and monthly status reporting can create friction or hide emerging delivery risks. This course addresses the practical challenge of creating an Agile PMO that supports teams without weakening assurance, investment control, dependency management or executive visibility.

Participants learn how to define an Agile PMO operating model, select fit-for-purpose governance controls and connect team-level delivery data to portfolio decisions. The course covers adaptive portfolio planning, lightweight stage gates, OKRs, outcome-based roadmaps, capacity forecasting, RAID management, dependency mapping, metrics design and benefits tracking. Participants practise translating Jira and delivery-team data into concise governance dashboards, escalation criteria and decision papers that senior stakeholders can use.

Delivery combines instructor-led explanations with a running enterprise case study, facilitated design workshops and hands-on use of practical templates. Each participant develops an Agile PMO governance blueprint for a realistic portfolio: operating principles, meeting cadence, decision rights, minimum reporting dataset, metrics, controls and implementation actions. The completed blueprint provides a structured starting point for improving governance in the participant's own organisation.

The course is suited to professionals who already understand basic project delivery and now need to establish, operate or improve a PMO in an Agile or hybrid environment. It is equally valuable for managers sponsoring PMO change who need assurance that governance will improve delivery decisions rather than add administrative burden.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical exposure to projects, programmes, PMO reporting or Agile delivery and be comfortable discussing scope, milestones, risks, stakeholders and delivery status. Familiarity with Scrum or Kanban concepts, including backlogs, sprints, boards and work in progress, is helpful because the course uses these terms when designing controls and metrics. Basic spreadsheet confidence is useful for portfolio exercises. Prior use of Jira, Confluence or Power BI is not required; guided examples are provided. No Agile certification, coding ability, financial modelling expertise or prior PMO leadership role is required.

Training methodology

The five days use short instructor-led modules followed by applied work on a multi-team product and transformation portfolio. Participants assess PMO service demand, configure governance scenarios, interpret sample Jira data and debate trade-offs between team autonomy and portfolio assurance. Small groups create roadmaps, dependency maps, dashboards and escalation rules, then test them against changing case-study conditions. Facilitated peer review is used to improve each design. On the final day, participants convert their work into an Agile PMO governance blueprint and a practical 90-day adoption plan for their organisation.

Day 2: Adaptive governance and decision architecture

Day 3: Portfolio planning, prioritisation and capacity

Day 4: Metrics, reporting and portfolio insight
