Course overview

Leaders are often asked to improve engagement, collaboration, service quality, or change adoption while teams are tired of deficit-focused reviews and repeated problem escalation. Appreciative Inquiry offers a disciplined alternative: identify the conditions under which people, teams, and systems perform at their best, then use those findings to design a credible future and practical action. This course equips leaders to facilitate that process without ignoring operational constraints, performance gaps, or difficult stakeholder perspectives.

Participants learn the Appreciative Inquiry 5-D cycle—Define, Discover, Dream, Design and Destiny—and apply it to a live leadership or organisational challenge. They practise framing affirmative topics, conducting appreciative interviews, extracting themes from qualitative evidence, creating a positive core map, facilitating future-focused dialogue, and converting aspirations into measurable commitments. The course also introduces SOAR analysis, provocative propositions, stakeholder mapping, inclusive meeting design, and action measures that keep inquiry outcomes connected to business priorities.

Delivery combines instructor-led demonstration, facilitated peer practice, case analysis, interview simulations, visual mapping, and structured design workshops. Participants work progressively on an issue from their own workplace, such as cross-functional collaboration, leadership culture, employee retention, customer experience, or post-merger integration. They leave with an Appreciative Inquiry Facilitation Pack containing a defined inquiry topic, stakeholder plan, interview guide, theme analysis, workshop agenda, positive-core narrative, design propositions, and a 90-day implementation plan.

The course is suited to managers, internal facilitators, HR and organisational development professionals, transformation practitioners, and consultants who need to lead constructive change conversations across teams or stakeholder groups.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Frame an affirmative inquiry topic that links a leadership challenge to a defined business outcome

  • Analyse interview data to identify recurring strengths, peak experiences, values, and enabling conditions
  • Create a positive core map that translates qualitative themes into organisational capabilities
  • Lead a 5-D Appreciative Inquiry workshop with timed activities, inclusive participation methods, and clear outputs
  • Develop provocative propositions that describe observable future leadership and team practices
  • Apply SOAR analysis to connect strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results measures

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require previous formal training in Appreciative Inquiry, coaching, organisational psychology, or facilitation accreditation. Participants should have experience working in a team, leadership, HR, change, project, or service environment and should bring one genuine workplace challenge they can use throughout the week. Familiarity with basic meeting facilitation and simple action planning is helpful. Participants need to be comfortable contributing to paired interviews and group workshops. No specialist software, statistical analysis skills, or prior experience with SOAR, 5-D, or qualitative coding is required.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led inputs followed by closely coached application. Participants examine leadership and change cases, practise appreciative interviewing in pairs, code interview notes for themes, and facilitate selected 5-D activities in small groups. Visual work is completed through positive-core maps, SOAR canvases, stakeholder maps, and design-proposition templates. Each participant develops an inquiry around a real workplace issue, receives peer and instructor feedback, and uses the final day to build a facilitation plan, measures, sponsor briefing, and 90-day implementation schedule.

Frequently asked questions

No. The course starts with the principles and 5-D process before moving into facilitated practice. Experience leading meetings, projects, teams, HR initiatives, or change activity will help you apply the method to a realistic context.

Bring a laptop or tablet if possible, plus a current workplace challenge that would benefit from a strengths-based inquiry. Course templates can be completed digitally using Miro, Microsoft Forms, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Teams, although printed materials are available in classroom delivery.

It is designed for leaders and practitioners who need to facilitate constructive change across a team, function, or stakeholder group. It is particularly useful for organisational development, HR, learning, transformation, engagement, and internal consulting roles.

This course teaches a specific facilitated change method rather than a broad set of leadership theories or project change frameworks. Participants learn how to run appreciative interviews, analyse stories, lead 5-D workshops, create provocative propositions, and establish implementation measures.

Yes, provided the issue is framed responsibly and is not used to avoid accountability, risk controls, or root-cause analysis. The course shows how to acknowledge constraints and performance data while investigating the proven conditions that support better results.

You will leave with an Appreciative Inquiry Facilitation Pack tailored to your selected challenge. It includes a topic statement, stakeholder map, interview guide, coded themes, positive-core map, workshop agenda, design propositions, and 90-day action plan.
