Course overview
People managers are often held accountable for engagement, delivery, retention, and performance while relying on command-and-control habits that slow decisions and reduce ownership. Servant leadership offers a practical alternative: managers remove barriers, clarify purpose, develop capability, and create the conditions in which people can perform without being micromanaged. This course helps experienced managers apply that approach when workloads are high, priorities conflict, and team members need different levels of support.
Participants examine servant leadership as an operating method rather than a set of values statements. They learn to diagnose employee needs, use active listening and coaching questions, delegate with clear decision rights, run developmental one-to-ones, resolve tensions without avoiding accountability, and convert team feedback into visible action. The course also addresses the difficult balance between serving employees and maintaining standards, deadlines, customer commitments, and organisational controls.
Through manager scenarios, coaching practice, stakeholder mapping, and team operating-model workshops, participants test the methods against realistic leadership situations. They leave with a Servant Leadership Action Plan containing a personal leadership charter, stakeholder listening plan, delegation matrix, one-to-one conversation structure, team working agreements, and 90-day implementation measures. This makes the programme suitable for immediate application with a current team rather than as a purely conceptual leadership course.
The course is designed for managers who already lead people or cross-functional work and need a more sustainable way to build accountability, trust, and capability across their teams.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Diagnose team needs using a servant leadership needs-assessment framework
- Conduct structured listening conversations using active-listening and paraphrasing techniques
- Create a delegation matrix that defines authority, decision rights, and escalation points
- Apply GROW coaching questions in developmental one-to-one meetings
- Facilitate team working agreements that establish behavioural and delivery commitments
- Address underperformance through supportive accountability conversations
- Prioritise manager actions using a stakeholder impact and barrier-removal map
- Produce a 90-day Servant Leadership Action Plan with measurable team indicators

- Build a repeatable leadership approach for supporting people while maintaining delivery standards

Target competencies
Who should attend
- People Managers — who need to improve ownership, engagement, and delivery without increasing control
- Team Leaders — who supervise frontline or operational teams with competing performance demands
- Department Heads — who need consistent leadership practices across several managers
- Project Managers — who lead contributors without relying solely on formal authority
- Newly Promoted Managers — who need to shift from individual contributor habits to people leadership
- HR Business Partners — who support managers with engagement, development, and performance issues
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should currently manage people, lead project contributors, or be preparing to take formal line-management responsibility within the next six months. They should understand basic workplace concepts such as objectives, performance feedback, delegation, one-to-one meetings, and organisational escalation routes. Experience of handling a real team challenge, such as missed deadlines, low engagement, role ambiguity, or conflict, will help participants apply the exercises. No prior leadership qualification, coaching accreditation, personality assessment, or specialist software expertise is required. Participants should bring examples of current team priorities and leadership situations they can work on confidentially.
Training methodology
Instructor-led sessions introduce servant leadership models, decision-rights methods, coaching structures, and accountability practices before participants apply them to workplace cases. Short demonstrations show how language changes the quality of a one-to-one, delegation discussion, or performance conversation. Participants work in small groups on manager scenarios involving disengagement, delivery pressure, conflict, and capability gaps; they also practise structured conversations with peer feedback. Each day adds material to an individual Servant Leadership Action Plan, culminating in a facilitated 90-day implementation and measurement workshop.
