Course overview
Environmental teams often hold monitoring results in spreadsheets, field forms, laboratory reports and separate location files, making it difficult to show where risks are increasing, which sites breach permit conditions, or whether mitigation actions are working. ArcGIS Pro provides a controlled environment for bringing these sources together, checking their spatial integrity and turning them into maps and analyses that can support inspections, environmental impact assessments, regulator submissions and management decisions.
This five-day course teaches participants to use ArcGIS Pro for environmental monitoring and mapping workflows. They will create and manage geodatabases; import and validate monitoring data; georeference environmental information; work with coordinate systems; symbolise sampling results; build habitat, pollution and compliance maps; run spatial and temporal analysis; and produce repeatable map layouts. The course also covers linking ArcGIS Pro projects with ArcGIS Online, Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps to support field-to-office monitoring processes.
Teaching combines instructor demonstrations with guided ArcGIS Pro exercises based on a realistic environmental monitoring scenario involving water-quality sampling, sensitive receptors, inspection findings and permit thresholds. Participants build a structured ArcGIS Pro project containing cleaned monitoring data, analysis layers, risk maps, field-collection configuration and a publication-ready map layout. This portfolio-style deliverable can be adapted to their own organisation's sites, assets and reporting requirements.

- Import, clean and validate monitoring records from Excel, CSV, shapefile and GPS data sources
- Assign and transform coordinate systems to align sampling locations, site boundaries and base mapping accurately
- Build graduated-symbol, classified and unique-value maps for water quality, habitat condition and inspection status
- Apply attribute queries, definition queries and spatial selections to identify permit exceedances and sensitive receptors
- Run buffer, overlay, proximity and hotspot analyses to assess environmental risk around monitored sites
- Configure a field monitoring workflow using ArcGIS Online, Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps
- Produce a print-ready environmental monitoring map and an ArcGIS Pro project package for internal reporting

Training methodology
The programme is delivered through short instructor-led demonstrations followed by guided work in ArcGIS Pro. Participants use a shared environmental monitoring dataset to import sampling records, build geodatabases, map results, analyse proximity to receptors and create reporting outputs. Case discussions examine how map choices affect compliance decisions and stakeholder communication. Small-group workshops test monitoring priorities and field-data designs. On the final day, each participant adapts the workflow to a workplace-style scenario and records an application plan for their own monitoring process.

Day 2: Preparing and mapping environmental monitoring data

- XY point creation from GPS coordinates and field observations
- Data cleaning, field types, domains and coded value lists
- Joins, relates and attachments for laboratory results and inspection evidence
- Attribute editing and quality assurance checks
- Thematic symbology for concentrations, condition classes and compliance status
- Labelling, pop-ups and map navigation for operational review
Workshop: Participants clean a water-quality monitoring dataset, create sampling-point features and produce a thematic map showing parameter results against permit thresholds.
