Course overview

Major change programmes rarely fail because the target operating model is poorly designed; they fail when senior leaders do not provide visible direction, resolve cross-functional conflicts, fund adoption work, or hold executives accountable for business outcomes. This course equips senior executives to act as active sponsors of enterprise change rather than passive approvers of plans. Participants learn how to create the conditions in which transformation decisions are understood, reinforced and sustained across business units.

The course focuses on the executive responsibilities that determine adoption: defining the case for change, setting sponsor governance, mapping political and operational stakeholders, aligning the leadership coalition, and making timely decisions on scope, investment and risk. Participants practise sponsor communication techniques, sponsorship roadmaps, resistance escalation methods and benefit-realisation reviews. They use the Prosci ADKAR Model and Kotter's 8-Step Process as practical lenses for directing change without delegating accountability for it.

Delivered through instructor-led briefings, executive case simulations, peer challenge sessions and facilitated workshops, the programme uses a live or realistic transformation scenario throughout the week. Participants leave with an Executive Sponsorship Action Plan containing a sponsor role charter, stakeholder influence map, leadership communication calendar, governance cadence, decision log and adoption-risk dashboard suitable for immediate use with their programme team.

The course is designed for leaders sponsoring complex business, digital, regulatory, operating-model or culture change. It is particularly valuable where a programme involves multiple functions, competing priorities, frontline adoption risks or senior leaders who must present a unified direction to the organisation.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define an executive change case that links strategic intent, business benefits, affected groups and measurable adoption outcomes
  • Create a sponsorship charter that assigns visible leadership actions, decision rights and escalation responsibilities
  • Map stakeholder influence using a power-interest analysis and targeted engagement strategy
  • Build a sponsor coalition using Kotter's 8-Step Process to align leaders around shared change commitments
  • Apply the Prosci ADKAR Model to diagnose adoption barriers and direct sponsor interventions
  • Design an executive communication calendar with audience-specific messages, channels and leadership moments
  • Establish a change governance cadence using decision logs, adoption metrics and risk escalation thresholds
  • Produce an Executive Sponsorship Action Plan for a current or planned organisational change initiative

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Strengthen credibility as a sponsor who can convert strategic intent into visible leadership action
  • Gain a repeatable method for challenging programme teams on adoption risk, not only schedule and budget status
  • Improve confidence in handling executive disagreement, resistance and delayed decisions during transformation
  • Build a board-ready sponsorship action plan that can be applied to an active initiative
  • Demonstrate leadership capability in enterprise transformation, operating-model change and benefit realisation

For your organisation

  • Creates clearer executive ownership for decisions that programme teams cannot resolve alone
  • Reduces adoption risk by identifying affected groups, resistance patterns and sponsor interventions early
  • Improves consistency of leadership messages across business units and communication channels
  • Strengthens governance through defined decision rights, escalation routes and review cadences
  • Protects transformation investment by connecting business benefits to measurable employee and stakeholder adoption

Who should attend

  • Chief Executives and Managing Directors — who must visibly sponsor enterprise-wide strategic change
  • Chief Operating Officers — who translate transformation decisions into operational accountability across functions
  • Executive Vice Presidents and Business Unit Presidents — who lead leaders through major portfolio, operating-model or market changes
  • Chief Human Resources Officers — who need to align leadership behaviour, workforce adoption and culture change
  • Chief Information Officers and Digital Executives — who sponsor technology-enabled transformation beyond system implementation
  • Transformation and Programme Sponsors — who require a disciplined executive role in high-risk change portfolios

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have experience leading a function, business unit, programme board or major strategic initiative, and should be familiar with basic project or transformation terminology such as business case, stakeholder, governance, risk, milestone and benefits. They should bring a current or recent change initiative to use in exercises where possible. No formal change-management qualification, statistical expertise, software configuration knowledge or prior use of Prosci ADKAR or Kotter's model is required. The course assumes authority to influence senior stakeholders, rather than responsibility for producing detailed project plans.

Training methodology

The programme combines concise instructor-led teaching with executive-level application. Participants analyse transformation cases, assess sponsor behaviours against the Prosci ADKAR Model and Kotter's 8-Step Process, and rehearse difficult conversations involving resistant leaders, competing business priorities and stalled decisions. Small-group workshops build stakeholder maps, governance designs and communication interventions for a shared case or participants' own initiatives. Daily peer review sharpens executive judgement. On the final day, each participant integrates the week's work into a practical Executive Sponsorship Action Plan with priorities for the first 90 days.

Course outline

Day 1: The Executive Sponsor Role

  • Distinguishing sponsorship accountability from programme management responsibility
  • Diagnosing why major transformations lose executive momentum
  • Defining the strategic case for change and non-negotiable outcomes
  • Linking business benefits to behavioural and operational adoption measures
  • Assessing sponsor visibility, alignment and commitment
  • Applying Kotter's 8-Step Process at executive level

  • Designing executive messages for affected workforce segments
  • Selecting communication channels, leadership forums and symbolic actions
  • Conducting sponsor-led town halls and leader briefings
  • Addressing resistance without dismissing operational concerns

Frequently asked questions

You should have led a function, business unit, programme board or strategic initiative and understand common terms such as governance, stakeholder, risk and business case. Prior formal change-management training is not required, but the course is not intended for participants with no leadership responsibility.

A laptop is useful for completing the action-plan templates and working with the example Excel and Power BI materials. No licences, software installation or technical configuration skills are required for the course.

It is primarily designed for executives who sponsor and govern change, rather than practitioners who build detailed change plans. Programme and change leaders can benefit when they are preparing to assume sponsor-level accountability or need to improve how they engage executive sponsors.

General change-management courses typically focus on practitioner activities such as impact assessment, communications planning and training delivery. This course concentrates on the executive decisions, visible leadership behaviours, coalition-building and governance actions that enable those activities to succeed.

Participants use a current or realistic initiative to create a sponsor charter, stakeholder map, communication calendar and governance cadence during the week. The final 90-day action plan provides a structured agenda for sponsor meetings, leadership interventions and adoption-risk reviews.

You leave with an Executive Sponsorship Action Plan tailored to a transformation scenario or your own initiative. It includes a role charter, influence map, sponsor coalition plan, decision log, communication calendar, adoption measures and first-90-day priorities.
