Course overview
HR teams are increasingly expected to demonstrate more than operational competence: they must show how their capability supports workforce outcomes, organisational strategy, ethical practice and measurable business performance. The CIPD Profession Map provides a recognised structure for assessing this capability, but many HR professionals struggle to translate its knowledge areas and behaviours into credible development priorities, role expectations and team plans. This course addresses that gap through a practical, evidence-based approach to using the map as a workforce capability tool.
Participants work through the CIPD Profession Map’s purpose, core knowledge, core behaviours and specialist knowledge areas, applying them to real HR roles and organisational priorities. They learn to conduct capability diagnostics, assess proficiency against relevant map standards, identify evidence of performance, define development gaps and distinguish between individual, team and organisational capability needs. The course also covers development planning, stakeholder engagement, ethical decision-making, capability measurement and the use of people data to support investment decisions.
Delivery combines instructor-led interpretation of the map with role-based workshops, case studies, peer calibration exercises and facilitated planning sessions. Participants build a CIPD Profession Map capability development portfolio containing a role-to-map alignment, self-assessment evidence log, capability gap analysis, 12-month development plan and a manager-ready business case for priority interventions. This gives attendees a practical document they can use immediately in performance, talent, succession or HR transformation conversations.
The course is designed for experienced HR practitioners, HR business partners, people managers and L&D professionals who need to use the CIPD Profession Map to develop themselves, their teams or a wider HR function.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in an HR, people, L&D or talent role and be familiar with core HR activities such as employee relations, resourcing, performance management, learning or workforce planning. They should understand their organisation’s HR structure, current role responsibilities and business objectives. Basic confidence using Microsoft Excel is expected for capability data exercises; Power BI experience is helpful but not required. Participants should ideally bring an HR role profile or development objective to apply during workshops. No prior CIPD qualification, formal people analytics training or previous use of the CIPD Profession Map is required.
Training methodology
The five-day programme uses short instructor-led briefings to establish CIPD Profession Map concepts, followed by structured application to realistic HR function and business-partner cases. Participants analyse role profiles, calibrate assessment evidence in small groups, use Excel or Power BI to examine capability data, and practise presenting development recommendations to stakeholders. Facilitated peer review tests the quality of each participant’s assumptions, evidence and priorities. Each day adds a component to an individual capability development portfolio, culminating in an implementation plan for their own role, team or HR function.
