Course overview
High-stakes conversations often fail not because people lack expertise, but because they avoid the issue, become defensive, soften the message until it is unclear, or push for agreement without hearing the other person’s facts and concerns. This five-day course equips professionals to handle conversations involving missed commitments, performance concerns, safety issues, cross-functional conflict, changing priorities, difficult feedback, and decisions where trust is under pressure. It gives managers a repeatable way to address problems before they become formal grievances, rework, attrition, or delayed delivery.
Participants learn the Crucial Conversations dialogue framework: Start with Heart, Learn to Look, Make It Safe, Master My Stories, STATE My Path, Explore Others’ Paths, and Move to Action. They practise separating facts from interpretations, identifying silence and violence in dialogue, restoring mutual purpose, using contrasting statements, sharing observations without accusation, asking AMPP questions, and converting conversation outcomes into clear commitments. The emphasis is on maintaining candour and respect at the same time, even when power, emotion, or disagreement are present.
Instruction combines instructor demonstrations, diagnostic reflection, scenario analysis, structured role plays, peer feedback, and rehearsed workplace conversations. Participants work with live issues from their own roles, such as escalating a delivery risk, challenging a senior stakeholder, or addressing repeated underperformance. They leave with a completed Crucial Conversation Preparation Plan, personal triggers map, dialogue scripts for two workplace situations, and an action plan for applying the methods with colleagues. A certificate of completion is awarded to participants who complete the programme.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Diagnose when a workplace discussion has become a crucial conversation using the stakes, opinions and emotions test
- Apply Start with Heart to clarify personal motives and avoid winning, rescuing or punishing behaviours
- Identify silence and violence cues using the Learn to Look diagnostic method
- Restore dialogue conditions through mutual purpose, mutual respect and contrasting statements
- Separate observable facts from interpretations using the Path to Action model
- Present concerns with the six-step STATE My Path method without becoming accusatory
- Use AMPP listening skills to explore another person’s facts, stories, feelings and needs
- Produce a Crucial Conversation Preparation Plan with agreed actions, owners, dates and follow-up measures
Benefits of attending
For you
- Handle difficult feedback and accountability conversations with a defined structure rather than relying on instinct
- Build credibility as a manager or specialist who can raise sensitive issues clearly and respectfully
- Reduce avoidance of conflict by preparing facts, purpose, questions and requests before a conversation
- Respond more constructively when challenged by senior colleagues, direct reports or clients
- Create a reusable portfolio of prepared dialogue plans for current workplace issues
For your organisation
- Resolve performance, delivery and conduct concerns earlier before they require formal escalation
- Improve decision quality by surfacing dissenting facts and concerns that employees might otherwise withhold
- Reduce rework and missed commitments through explicit action agreements, owners and follow-up dates
- Strengthen manager consistency when giving feedback, handling conflict and setting expectations
- Protect retention and engagement by replacing blame, silence and defensive exchanges with respectful dialogue
Target competencies
Who should attend
- People Managers — who must address performance, conduct and commitment issues directly and fairly
- Project Managers — who need to challenge delivery risks, resource gaps and missed dependencies across teams
- Senior Leaders — who must create candid dialogue around difficult strategic and operational decisions
- HR Business Partners — who coach managers through sensitive employee relations and feedback conversations
- Team Leaders and Supervisors — who need to correct unsafe practices, quality failures or unproductive behaviours early
- Account Managers and Client Partners — who must resolve expectation gaps and relationship tension without damaging trust
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have regular workplace conversations that involve accountability, feedback, competing priorities or disagreement, and should be prepared to use anonymised real examples during practice. Familiarity with basic feedback concepts, such as observable behaviour and agreed expectations, is useful but not essential. No prior Crucial Conversations training, coaching qualification, psychology background or specialist software is required. This is an intermediate programme because participants practise applying the framework in emotionally charged, ambiguous and higher-stakes situations; complete beginners should expect structured preparation templates and coached role-play before handling complex cases.
Training methodology
The programme is delivered through instructor-led teaching in a classroom or live online setting, with short demonstrations followed by repeated skills practice. Participants analyse dialogue breakdowns, map their own reactions through the Path to Action, and rehearse challenging conversations in triads as speaker, counterpart and observer. Facilitators use observation checklists to give feedback on safety, facts, STATE and AMPP behaviours. Each day includes workplace application, and the final day ends with a coached preparation workshop for a real upcoming conversation and a 30-day implementation plan.
