Course overview
Chief Information Officers are expected to modernise core platforms, improve customer and employee experiences, extract value from data, and control cyber and delivery risk at the same time. The difficulty is rarely a shortage of technology options. It is deciding which transformation bets support business strategy, sequencing dependent initiatives, retiring legacy constraints, and proving value to the executive team before investment momentum is lost. This course equips CIOs to lead a transformation portfolio rather than manage a disconnected set of IT projects.
Participants build a practical operating model for digital transformation leadership. They assess digital maturity, translate business priorities into measurable outcomes, develop a target enterprise architecture, and prioritise initiatives using value, feasibility, risk, and dependency criteria. The programme covers digital product operating models, cloud and platform decisions, data and AI governance, cybersecurity by design, sourcing strategy, and transformation metrics. Participants also practise creating board-level narratives that connect technology investment to revenue, resilience, cost, service performance, and regulatory obligations.
Teaching combines instructor-led briefings with CIO case studies, architecture and portfolio workshops, and peer challenge sessions. Each participant applies the methods to their own organisation or a supplied enterprise scenario, using structured templates for capability mapping, investment prioritisation, roadmap design, and benefits tracking. They leave with a CIO Digital Transformation Blueprint: a concise executive pack containing a current-state assessment, target-state principles, prioritised initiative portfolio, 12- to 24-month roadmap, governance model, risk register, and KPI dashboard outline.
The course is designed for experienced technology leaders who influence enterprise strategy and funding decisions. It is particularly valuable where an organisation is moving from legacy modernisation programmes to an integrated business-led digital transformation agenda.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Assess enterprise digital maturity using a capability-based diagnostic and evidence scoring model
- Translate corporate strategy into a prioritised digital capability map and transformation thesis
- Design a target-state technology architecture using TOGAF principles and ArchiMate viewpoints
- Prioritise transformation initiatives with a value-risk-feasibility-dependency portfolio matrix
- Construct a 12- to 24-month transformation roadmap with sequencing, milestones, owners, and funding gates
- Establish product, data, cloud, and cybersecurity governance decision rights for a digital operating model
- Define benefits-realisation KPIs linking technology investment to business, operational, and risk outcomes
- Present a board-ready digital transformation investment case and CIO Digital Transformation Blueprint
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build a repeatable method for moving from executive strategy discussions to a funded transformation roadmap
- Strengthen credibility in board and executive forums through clearer technology value and risk narratives
- Gain practical templates for capability assessment, portfolio prioritisation, governance, and benefits reporting
- Improve confidence in challenging vendor-led solution proposals using architecture, dependency, and value criteria
- Develop a tangible CIO Digital Transformation Blueprint that can support an immediate workplace initiative
For your organisation
- Creates a more disciplined basis for selecting transformation investments instead of funding disconnected technology projects
- Improves alignment between business priorities, enterprise architecture, delivery capacity, and technology spend
- Reduces duplication and legacy risk by making platform rationalisation and dependency decisions visible
- Establishes clearer accountability for product, data, cloud, cybersecurity, and benefits-realisation decisions
- Provides an executive-ready roadmap and KPI structure that improves oversight of transformation outcomes
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Information Officers — who must convert business strategy into an investable, governed technology transformation portfolio
- Deputy CIOs and IT Directors — who lead major modernisation programmes and need an enterprise-wide transformation method
- Chief Digital Officers — who must align digital products, channels, data, and platforms with core IT strategy
- Enterprise Architects — who need to turn target architecture decisions into sequenced transformation roadmaps
- Heads of Technology Strategy or Transformation — who coordinate investment cases, delivery governance, and benefits tracking
- Technology Portfolio Managers — who must compare competing initiatives and manage dependencies across the change portfolio
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have at least three years of experience leading IT, digital, architecture, portfolio, or transformation work, with exposure to annual planning, technology investment decisions, and senior stakeholder communication. Familiarity with cloud services, enterprise applications, cybersecurity risk, data governance, and project or product delivery is assumed. Participants should be able to interpret a business case and discuss technology trade-offs in their organisation. Prior certification in TOGAF, COBIT, ITIL, Agile, or cloud platforms is not required, and no coding, data science, or hands-on systems administration experience is needed.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led modules to introduce CIO-level frameworks, followed by applied work on a realistic enterprise transformation scenario and participants' own contexts. Teams create capability maps, assess a legacy estate, score investment options, define governance decisions, and sequence a roadmap using facilitated templates. Case discussions examine cloud migration, data-platform, product-operating-model, and cyber-resilience choices. Daily peer reviews test assumptions from the perspective of a CFO, COO, CISO, and business sponsor. The final session is a structured executive presentation and action-planning workshop.
