Course overview

Warehouse traceability fails when identifiers are applied inconsistently across receiving, put-away, replenishment, picking, packing and dispatch. A barcode that scans successfully can still carry the wrong data, omit a required Application Identifier, use an unsuitable GS1 data carrier, or fail to support lot, serial, expiry or SSCC-based tracking. These weaknesses create inventory investigation delays, shipment disputes, recall exposure and manual reconciliation between warehouse systems, suppliers and customers.

This five-day course applies the GS1 General Specifications to warehouse labelling and scanning decisions. Participants learn to structure GTINs, GLNs, SSCCs and GS1 Application Identifiers; distinguish GS1-128, GS1 DataMatrix and ITF-14 use cases; select data attributes for trade items, logistics units and returnable assets; and interpret symbol quality requirements. They practise translating warehouse traceability requirements into barcode data strings, label layouts, scanning rules and master-data controls that can be implemented in a WMS, ERP or supplier labelling programme.

Instructor-led explanations are combined with barcode decoding exercises, label-design workshops, warehouse process case studies and group reviews of non-conforming labels. Participants work through a connected scenario from supplier receipt to outbound dispatch, using GS1 rules to identify and correct data, symbology and traceability gaps. They leave with a practical GS1 warehouse traceability implementation pack: a process-to-identifier matrix, Application Identifier data dictionary, logistics-label specification, barcode verification checklist and 90-day action plan.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should understand core warehouse processes such as goods receipt, put-away, picking, packing, dispatch and cycle counting, and should be comfortable reading basic product and logistics labels. Experience with a WMS, ERP inventory module, handheld scanner or supplier label specification is useful because exercises refer to system transactions and operational data fields. Familiarity with GTINs or barcode symbologies is helpful but not essential; these are taught from first principles. No programming, barcode-printing software expertise, GS1 membership or prior formal GS1 training is required. Participants should bring examples of their current labels or traceability issues where organisational policy permits.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led sessions to establish each GS1 rule, followed by practical work with warehouse labels, barcode strings and traceability scenarios. Participants decode GS1 element strings, map identifiers to warehouse events, compare data-carrier options and inspect examples of poor symbol placement and incomplete label content. Small groups produce supplier-label requirements and resolve a simulated traceability incident from receipt through dispatch. On day five, each participant converts the learning into a site-specific implementation plan, reviewed against operational constraints, system capabilities and ownership.

Day 1: GS1 identification foundations for warehouse operations

  • GS1 system architecture and the role of the GS1 General Specifications
  • GTIN allocation rules for trade items and packaging levels
  • GLN use for legal entities, functions and physical warehouse locations
  • SSCC structure and logistics unit identification
  • Fixed-measure and variable-measure trade item identification
  • Check digit calculation and identifier validation
  • Warehouse event mapping from receipt to dispatch

Workshop: Participants map a warehouse process to the GTIN, GLN and SSCC identifiers required at each custody and movement event.

Day 2: Application Identifiers and traceability data design

Day 3: Data carriers and logistics label construction

  • ITF-14 use for corrugated cases and distribution packaging
  • Data carrier selection by packaging level and scan environment
  • GS1 logistic label sections and mandatory data content

Workshop: Participants create a GS1 logistics-label specification for a palletised shipment, including encoded data, label zones and placement requirements.

Day 4: Scanning, verification and conformance control

  • Scanner configuration for GS1 symbologies and FNC1 recognition
  • Barcode print quality concepts and ISO/IEC verification grades
  • Common decoding failures in warehouse scanning environments
  • Label damage, contrast, curvature and substrate risk assessment
  • Inbound supplier label conformance checking
  • Non-conformance classification and corrective-action records
  • Master-data governance for identifier changes and packaging revisions

Workshop: Participants inspect sample labels, identify conformance defects and complete a corrective-action report for a supplier label failure.

Day 5: Warehouse traceability implementation and governance
