Course overview
Healthcare HR teams operate where patient safety, licensing requirements, shift coverage, privacy obligations, union considerations, and employment law meet. A missed license renewal, incomplete background check, incorrect overtime classification, delayed accommodation response, or inconsistent disciplinary record can expose a hospital, clinic, care provider, or medical practice to regulatory findings, claims, staffing disruption, and reputational damage. This course equips HR professionals to build workforce practices that are both operationally workable and defensible in a healthcare environment.
Participants examine the full employee lifecycle through a healthcare compliance lens: workforce planning, recruitment controls, credential and exclusion screening, onboarding, timekeeping, leave, attendance, performance management, investigations, discipline, and separation. They learn to interpret core US requirements including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, OSHA, HIPAA workforce privacy duties, EEOC principles, and Joint Commission-related personnel-file expectations. Practical skills include creating compliance matrices, auditing personnel records, documenting employment decisions, managing mandatory training evidence, and using workforce data to identify staffing and compliance risk.
Delivery combines instructor-led teaching with realistic cases drawn from hospitals, outpatient clinics, long-term care providers, and multi-site medical groups. Participants work with sample personnel files, credentialing trackers, absence reports, overtime data, investigation records, and policy templates. By the end of the week, each participant produces a Healthcare HR Workforce Compliance Action Plan containing a risk register, audit checklist, priority controls, ownership assignments, and 90-day implementation steps that can be adapted for their organisation.
The course is suited to HR practitioners moving into healthcare, healthcare HR generalists, people managers with workforce responsibilities, and compliance professionals who need a practical understanding of how employment processes affect patient-facing operations.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Build a healthcare workforce compliance matrix linking employment processes to FLSA, FMLA, ADA, OSHA, HIPAA, EEOC, and accreditation obligations
- Audit personnel files using a documented checklist for licensure, credentialing, screening, training, and employment-record evidence
- Design role-based onboarding controls for background checks, exclusion screening, confidentiality acknowledgements, and mandatory training
- Apply FLSA classification and overtime calculation principles to common healthcare shift, on-call, and differential-pay scenarios
- Document ADA accommodation, FMLA leave, attendance, and return-to-work decisions using consistent case records
- Conduct a structured workplace investigation using allegation logs, interview plans, evidence registers, and findings reports
- Analyse workforce metrics to identify turnover, absence, overtime, vacancy, and compliance-risk patterns
- Produce a 90-day Healthcare HR Workforce Compliance Action Plan with controls, owners, milestones, and audit measures
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a practical framework for handling healthcare HR cases involving credentials, leave, overtime, privacy, and employee conduct
- Build confidence discussing workforce compliance risks with clinical leaders, legal counsel, payroll, and compliance teams
- Create audit-ready documentation rather than relying on informal notes or inconsistent manager records
- Strengthen readiness for healthcare HR, employee relations, workforce compliance, and practice-management roles
- Leave with reusable checklists, trackers, and an action plan that demonstrate immediate value to employers
For your organisation
- Reduce exposure from expired licences, missing training records, incomplete screening, and poorly maintained personnel files
- Improve consistency in overtime, leave, accommodation, attendance, investigation, and disciplinary decisions
- Give managers clearer escalation routes and documentation standards for employee relations issues
- Identify avoidable staffing costs through analysis of overtime, absence, vacancies, turnover, and agency reliance
- Establish a prioritised workforce compliance improvement plan with named owners and measurable follow-up actions
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Healthcare HR Managers — who must align employment practices with patient-care staffing and regulatory requirements
- HR Generalists in hospitals and clinics — who manage employee lifecycle processes and maintain defensible records
- Healthcare Compliance Officers — who need to test workforce controls alongside clinical and operational compliance
- Medical Practice Managers — who oversee recruitment, scheduling, training, and personnel documentation in care settings
- Nurse Managers and Department Heads — who apply attendance, performance, leave, and discipline processes to clinical teams
- Talent Acquisition and Credentialing Coordinators — who manage screening, onboarding, licensure, and workforce eligibility evidence
Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should understand basic HR terminology such as recruitment, onboarding, employee files, attendance, performance management, and termination, and should be comfortable reading policies and working with spreadsheet tables. Familiarity with their organisation’s HRIS, timekeeping process, credentialing workflow, or employee handbook is useful but not essential. A laptop with Microsoft Excel or equivalent spreadsheet access is recommended for workshop activities. No legal qualification, prior healthcare HR role, Workday access, payroll-specialist experience, or detailed knowledge of US employment law is required; complete beginners should expect a structured introduction before applying the methods.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led modules to explain the rule, control, and operational consequence, followed by applied healthcare HR workshops. Participants audit a sample personnel file, calculate overtime in shift-based scenarios, assess a licensure lapse, build a leave and accommodation case record, and plan a workplace investigation. Small groups compare decisions from hospital, clinic, and long-term care cases, then receive instructor feedback against practical control criteria. Each day adds material to an individual Healthcare HR Workforce Compliance Action Plan, refined on day five into a workplace implementation roadmap.
