Course overview
Startup founders often become the default HR function while hiring their first employees, setting pay practices, resolving performance issues, and trying to preserve culture under delivery pressure. Informal decisions that work with five people can create costly inconsistency at 25: unclear job expectations, undocumented pay decisions, weak onboarding, manager conflict, and employee data held in spreadsheets or private messages. This course gives founders a practical operating model for handling people decisions before an internal HR leader is hired.
Participants learn how to build a founder-appropriate HR foundation: workforce planning, role design, structured recruitment, compliant selection records, employment documentation, onboarding, performance conversations, compensation principles, leave administration, and employee relations escalation. They practise using job scorecards, interview rubrics, onboarding checklists, performance expectations, policy registers, people metrics, and risk triage tools. The programme distinguishes decisions a founder can manage directly from issues that require qualified legal, payroll, tax, or HR advice.
Delivered over five instructor-led days in the classroom or live online, the course uses startup cases, facilitated decision simulations, template-building workshops, and peer review of real operating scenarios. Participants leave with a tailored Startup HR Operating Pack containing a 90-day people plan, hiring workflow, interview kit, onboarding plan, core policy register, performance conversation framework, and people dashboard specification. This gives both the attendee and budget holder practical artefacts that can be implemented immediately.
The course is designed for founders and early-stage leaders who are responsible for people decisions alongside commercial, product, or operational responsibilities. It is particularly valuable for organisations moving from ad hoc hiring to repeatable people practices, or preparing to scale headcount, enter new markets, raise investment, or appoint their first dedicated HR professional.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Build a 90-day workforce plan using headcount assumptions, role priorities, and hiring triggers

- Create an onboarding checklist covering preboarding, first-week outcomes, probation goals, and manager ownership
- Conduct documented performance conversations using expectations, evidence, feedback, and agreed next actions
- Apply a compensation decision framework using role level, market data, internal equity, and affordability constraints
- Establish a core HR policy register with ownership, review dates, employee acknowledgement, and escalation routes
- Produce a founder-ready people dashboard specification using headcount, attrition, hiring, absence, and probation metrics

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Startup Founders — who make early hiring, culture, pay, and people-risk decisions without an HR department
- Co-founders — who need a consistent approach to employee decisions across product, commercial, and operational functions
- Chief Operating Officers — who are formalising workforce processes as headcount and management layers grow
- Startup General Managers — who lead teams and need practical tools for recruitment, onboarding, and performance management
- First-time People or Operations Leads — who are building foundational HR processes before specialist teams are in place
- Scale-up Department Heads — who need to hire and manage employees consistently within a founder-led business
Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior HR qualifications or experience with an HR information system. Participants should understand their startup's basic business model, expected headcount, current roles, and who currently approves hiring and pay decisions. Familiarity with spreadsheets and shared documents is useful because exercises use templates, simple workforce calculations, and policy registers. Participants will benefit most if they can bring one live people challenge, such as an upcoming hire, onboarding gap, or performance concern. Employment-law expertise, payroll-system configuration, and prior use of BambooHR, Greenhouse, or Rippling are not required.
Training methodology
The instructor combines short, founder-focused teaching segments with startup growth cases, facilitated discussions, and template workshops. Participants map a current or simulated startup from first hire to scale-up, then build the documents needed at each point: scorecards, interview rubrics, onboarding checklists, policy registers, and dashboard measures. Role-play is used for offer, feedback, probation, and employee-relations conversations. Daily peer review tests whether each tool is usable by a time-constrained founder. On day five, participants convert their materials into a prioritised 90-day implementation plan.
