Course overview
Complex contracts rarely fail because parties cannot interpret individual clauses. They fail when commercial, operational and governance teams lack a disciplined way to manage shared objectives, dependencies, behaviours, decisions and disputes across organisational boundaries. This ISO 44001 Collaborative Contracting Training Course equips contracts professionals to move beyond transactional supplier management and establish structured collaborative business relationships that protect value, delivery performance and stakeholder confidence. It is particularly relevant where delivery depends on strategic suppliers, joint ventures, outsourcing partners, framework agreements or multi-party project teams.
Participants learn how ISO 44001:2017 structures a collaborative relationship management system across the full relationship lifecycle: awareness, knowledge, internal assessment, partner selection, working together, value creation, staying together and exit. The course covers relationship management plans, joint governance, relationship risk registers, shared performance measures, behavioural commitments, dispute escalation routes and continual-improvement reviews. Participants practise translating standard contract obligations into practical operating arrangements that make collaboration measurable, accountable and auditable.
Teaching combines instructor-led interpretation of ISO 44001 requirements with contract-based case analysis, facilitated workshops and team exercises. Participants assess a realistic client-supplier relationship, identify collaboration gaps, design governance and performance controls, and build a usable collaborative relationship management plan. They leave with an ISO 44001 implementation workbook containing templates, a relationship maturity assessment, governance map, risk register structure and a 90-day application plan for their own contract or partnership.
The course is designed for intermediate contracts, procurement, commercial, project and supplier-management professionals who already work with external parties and need to improve how relationships are governed after contract award. Managers gain a practical basis for deciding where collaboration will produce measurable value rather than becoming an informal, poorly controlled partnership.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Interpret ISO 44001:2017 requirements across the eight-stage collaborative relationship lifecycle
- Assess a contract relationship using an ISO 44001 maturity and gap-assessment framework
- Develop a collaborative relationship management plan with defined objectives, roles and review cycles
- Design joint governance structures including executive, operational and issue-resolution forums
- Create a relationship risk register covering behavioural, commercial, operational and dependency risks
- Define shared performance measures, dashboards and value-creation indicators for collaborative contracts
- Draft behavioural commitments and escalation pathways that align with contractual remedies
- Produce a 90-day ISO 44001 implementation roadmap for a live or simulated business relationship
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a structured ISO 44001 vocabulary for leading discussions with procurement, legal, operations and suppliers

- Strengthen credibility when advising on strategic supplier, alliance, outsourcing and joint-venture arrangements

For your organisation
- Establish more consistent governance for high-value and strategically important external relationships
- Reduce avoidable disputes by defining joint decision rights, behavioural expectations and escalation routes early

- Create auditable evidence that collaborative arrangements are controlled, reviewed and continually improved
- Identify value-creation opportunities across contract boundaries, including innovation, cost reduction and service improvement
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Contracts Managers — who must govern supplier and partner performance after contract award
- Commercial Managers — who need to protect commercial outcomes while building productive delivery relationships
- Procurement Managers — who manage strategic suppliers beyond sourcing and tender evaluation
- Project Managers — who depend on joint decision-making across client, contractor and supply-chain teams
- Supplier Relationship Managers — who need a recognised framework for improving key account collaboration
- Operations Managers — who must resolve cross-organisational delivery issues without constant contract escalation
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of managing, administering, procuring or delivering under commercial contracts, framework agreements, outsourcing arrangements or project partnerships. They should understand basic contract concepts such as scope, obligations, key performance indicators, change control, governance, risk allocation and escalation. Experience with supplier reviews, project meetings or stakeholder management is useful because exercises draw on realistic operating relationships. Participants should be comfortable reading contract extracts and using spreadsheets or document templates. No previous ISO 44001 training, certification-audit experience, legal qualification or specialist relationship-management software is required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short, focused sessions to explain ISO 44001 clauses and relationship-management practices, then applies each concept to a continuing client-supplier case. Participants review contract extracts, map stakeholders and dependencies, complete a maturity assessment, build a joint governance model and test escalation decisions against realistic delivery events. Small-group workshops compare alternative approaches to risk, performance and value creation. On the final day, each participant converts the course templates into a practical 90-day implementation plan for a selected relationship, supported by instructor feedback.
