Course overview
Quality problems rarely originate in one defective product or one employee error. They emerge when process ownership is unclear, work instructions are outdated, performance measures are disconnected from customer requirements, and corrective actions close without removing root causes. For operations, quality, and project professionals, ISO 9001 provides a practical management-system structure for controlling these weaknesses while improving flow, reducing rework, and making performance decisions from reliable evidence.
This five-day course applies ISO 9001:2015 requirements to real operational processes. Participants translate clauses into process controls, define scope and interested parties, map SIPOC and turtle-diagram process interactions, establish measurable quality objectives, manage documented information, assess operational risks, and build corrective-action systems using 5 Whys and fishbone analysis. They also learn to use internal audit findings, nonconformity records, KPI trends, and management review inputs to target productivity losses rather than merely demonstrate compliance.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanation with process-mapping workshops, clause interpretation, audit-role practice, corrective-action casework, and peer review. Participants work from a realistic manufacturing-and-service case organisation and develop an ISO 9001 implementation pack: a process map, risk register, KPI set, audit checklist, nonconformity report, corrective-action plan, and 90-day implementation roadmap. The result is a usable set of documents and methods that can be adapted to their own department or organisation.
The course is particularly suited to professionals responsible for quality systems, process performance, operational control, continuous improvement, or readiness for ISO 9001 certification or surveillance audits. It is not an auditor-certification course; it focuses on building, operating, measuring, and improving a quality management system that supports dependable delivery and productive operations.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of at least one operational, service-delivery, project, production, or support process and be comfortable discussing process steps, performance measures, and recurring problems. Familiarity with basic quality terms such as defect, corrective action, KPI, procedure, and audit is helpful, as is the ability to work with simple tables in Microsoft Excel. Participants do not need prior ISO 9001 lead auditor training, certification-audit experience, statistical software, or detailed knowledge of every ISO clause. Those new to ISO 9001 should expect to review the standard’s structure before applying it in workshops.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led clause briefings followed by applied quality-system work. Participants analyse a case organisation’s customer requirements, process failures, records, and performance data; map processes using SIPOC and turtle diagrams; and test controls against ISO 9001:2015 requirements. Small groups conduct a simulated internal audit, review evidence, classify findings, and develop corrective actions using 5 Whys and fishbone analysis. Each participant then adapts the course templates into a 90-day implementation plan for a selected workplace process.
Course outline
Day 1: ISO 9001 foundations and the process approach
- ISO 9001:2015 purpose, structure, and quality management principles
- Clause-by-clause interpretation for operational teams
- Context of the organisation and interested-party requirements
- Defining quality management system scope and boundaries
- Process approach, process ownership, inputs, outputs, and interfaces
- SIPOC mapping for customer-facing and support processes
- Turtle diagrams for process controls, resources, measures, and responsibilities
Workshop: Participants map a selected case-study process in SIPOC and turtle-diagram formats and identify its key control points.
Day 2: Planning, risk, documentation, and operational control
- Risk-based thinking under ISO 9001 clause 6.1
- Process risk registers, risk criteria, and treatment actions
- Quality objectives and planning to achieve them

- Document control, revision status, approval, access, and retention

Day 3: Performance measurement and productivity improvement

- Cost of quality, rework, scrap, delay, and failure-demand measures
- Trend analysis and Pareto analysis for recurring quality losses

Workshop: Participants build a KPI scorecard and Pareto-based improvement priority list from case-study complaint and process data.
Day 4: Internal auditing and nonconformity management

Workshop: Participants conduct a simulated process audit, gather evidence from a case file, and issue a completed nonconformity report.
Day 5: Corrective action and QMS implementation planning
