Participants build KoboToolbox forms for household, community, water-point, sanitation-facility, and hygiene-practice assessments. They translate assessment indicators into well-designed question types, skip logic, constraints, repeat groups, cascading selections, calculations, GPS capture, media prompts, and multilingual labels. The course also covers XLSForm design, KoboToolbox project settings, user permissions, offline data collection, enumerator guidance, data quality controls, exports, and basic spatial review of WASH findings.

Instruction combines demonstrations with a running humanitarian WASH needs-assessment case. Each participant configures and tests a complete KoboToolbox questionnaire, conducts simulated mobile interviews, reviews submissions in KoboToolbox, corrects form and data-quality issues, and exports a documented dataset for analysis. They leave with a deployment-ready WASH needs-assessment form, an XLSForm source file, a data dictionary, and a field-testing checklist that can be adapted to their organisation's response or programme.

The course is designed for staff who already understand core WASH programming or assessment work and now need to own, improve, or quality-assure digital field data collection. It is equally useful for technical staff working alongside MEAL, information management, and field teams.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have working knowledge of WASH concepts such as water sources, functionality, sanitation facilities, hygiene practices, and household or facility assessments. They should be comfortable using spreadsheets, including rows, columns, filters, and basic data entry, and should have previously used a web browser and Android smartphone or tablet for work. Prior KoboToolbox experience is helpful but not essential; the course starts with the platform interface before progressing to advanced form logic. No programming, database administration, GIS expertise, or prior XLSForm coding is required.

Training methodology

The instructor uses a single WASH emergency scenario throughout the five days, moving from assessment questions to a tested mobile deployment. Short technical demonstrations are followed by guided KoboToolbox builds, XLSForm editing labs, peer reviews, and simulated enumerator interviews on Android devices. Participants troubleshoot deliberately flawed forms and submissions, then compare data-quality implications in small groups. Daily feedback links form design choices to programme decisions. The final session includes an application-planning workshop in which participants prepare their own form adaptation, testing sequence, roles, and deployment actions.
