Course overview
Digital transformation programmes often stall after a successful pilot: a cloud platform is deployed but teams retain spreadsheet workarounds, a data catalogue is launched without data-owner participation, or automation creates anxiety about roles and control. Technology roadmaps alone do not resolve competing priorities, legacy habits, weak sponsorship or fragmented communication. This course equips leaders to use Kotter’s 8-Step Process to move a defined digital change from executive intent through adoption, measurable behaviour change and sustained operating practice.
Participants apply each Kotter step to digital initiatives such as ERP modernisation, cloud migration, AI-enabled workflow redesign, data governance implementation and cyber-security operating-model change. They learn to diagnose the case for change, build a credible guiding coalition, formulate a transformation vision, recruit a volunteer army, remove organisational barriers, plan short-term wins, sustain acceleration and anchor new digital practices in culture. The course also covers stakeholder segmentation, resistance analysis, change metrics, sponsor actions and communication methods tailored to technical and business audiences.
Delivery combines instructor-led analysis, digital transformation cases, facilitated workshops and practical use of Miro, Jira, Microsoft Power BI and Excel. Throughout the week, participants develop a Kotter-based Change Leadership Blueprint for a real or realistic transformation initiative. The completed blueprint includes a change case, coalition map, stakeholder plan, vision narrative, barrier-removal backlog, short-term-win scorecard, adoption dashboard and 90-day implementation plan that can be refined with sponsors after the course.
The programme is designed for professionals who already work around technology-enabled change and need a disciplined leadership method for securing adoption across business, IT, data and operational teams.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Diagnose a digital transformation case for change using Kotter Step 1 urgency evidence and stakeholder impact data
- Build a guiding-coalition map that identifies sponsors, change champions, technical leaders and decision rights
- Formulate a Kotter Step 3 transformation vision and strategic initiatives for a technology-enabled operating-model change
- Design audience-specific communication messages and two-way feedback loops for Kotter Step 4 enlistment
- Create a barrier-removal backlog linking adoption obstacles to owners, Jira actions and escalation routes
- Define short-term wins using measurable adoption, process, data-quality and customer-value indicators
- Construct a Power BI adoption dashboard to monitor change progress, resistance signals and benefit realisation
- Produce a 90-day Kotter Change Leadership Blueprint that anchors new digital behaviours into governance and performance routines
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable Kotter 8-Step method for leading adoption beyond a technology go-live
- Build credibility with sponsors by translating resistance and engagement issues into measurable leadership actions
- Learn to connect digital delivery artefacts such as roadmaps and backlogs with stakeholder and behaviour-change plans
- Leave with a portfolio-ready Change Leadership Blueprint based on a realistic transformation scenario
- Prepare to lead cross-functional transformation roles involving business, IT, data and operational stakeholders
For your organisation
- Reduce the risk of low adoption after digital platform, automation or data-governance launches
- Create clearer sponsor, coalition and champion responsibilities across business and technology functions
- Identify adoption barriers early and manage them through owned, prioritised remediation actions
- Measure short-term wins and adoption progress using defined indicators rather than anecdotal status reporting
- Embed new digital working practices into governance, performance management and team routines
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Digital Transformation Managers — who must convert technology delivery plans into sustained business adoption
- IT Programme and Project Managers — who need to manage organisational change alongside platforms, releases and dependencies
- Data and Analytics Leaders — who require participation in new data governance, reporting and data-quality practices
- Technology Product Owners — who must build user adoption and feedback into product rollout decisions
- Business Change Managers — who want to apply Kotter rigorously to enterprise digital initiatives
- Senior Operational Leaders — who sponsor process digitisation and must reinforce new team behaviours
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience working on, sponsoring or supporting a technology-enabled change initiative, such as a system implementation, cloud migration, data programme, automation rollout or operating-model redesign. They should understand basic project concepts including scope, milestones, stakeholders, risks and benefits, and be able to discuss a current or recent transformation case. Familiarity with Jira, Excel or Power BI is helpful but not essential; templates and guided exercises are provided. No coding, data-science, formal change-management certification or prior Kotter training is required.
Training methodology
The instructor introduces each Kotter step through digital transformation examples, then participants apply the method in structured workshops. Teams analyse cases involving cloud migration, data governance and AI-enabled process redesign; map stakeholders and coalitions in Miro; turn barriers into actionable Jira backlogs; and define adoption measures in Excel and Power BI. Facilitated peer review tests the practicality of each plan against sponsor behaviour, technical dependencies and operational constraints. The final session is an application-planning workshop in which participants assemble and present their Change Leadership Blueprint.
