Course overview

Oracle HCM Cloud Core HR configuration determines whether employee records, organisational structures, approvals and reporting behave consistently across the enterprise. HRIS teams often inherit partially configured tenants, struggle to translate policy changes into workable setup, or rely on spreadsheets and manual workarounds because workforce structures, actions, security and data loads were not designed as one operating model. This course addresses those practical configuration decisions for professionals responsible for making Core HR reliable, controlled and usable.

Participants configure Oracle HCM Cloud foundations including enterprises, legal employers, business units, departments, locations, jobs, positions, grades and workforce structures. They work through employment models, person and work relationship data, action and action-reason frameworks, descriptive flexfields, approval rules, security roles, HCM Data Loader templates, OTBI analysis and BI Publisher outputs. By the end of the course, participants can convert a documented HR requirement into configuration choices, test evidence and an implementation-ready design.

Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations in Oracle HCM Cloud with guided configuration labs, scenario-based troubleshooting and peer review of design decisions. Participants use a structured case organisation to configure a Core HR model, load controlled employee data and validate access and reporting outcomes. Each participant leaves with a Core HR configuration workbook, sample HDL files, a security and testing checklist, and an end-of-course action plan for applying the methods in their own tenant. A certificate of completion is awarded.

The course suits experienced HRIS, HR operations and implementation professionals who need stronger command of Oracle HCM Cloud Core HR rather than a broad introduction to HR technology. It is equally relevant for internal product owners and partner consultants preparing to support a new deployment, redesign workforce structures or stabilise an existing environment.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Configure enterprise, legal employer, business unit, department and location structures in Oracle HCM Cloud
  • Design jobs, positions, grades, grade ladders and workforce structures for a defined operating model
  • Map HR lifecycle events into action, action reason and employment configuration decisions
  • Create descriptive flexfields and value sets that capture controlled Core HR attributes
  • Apply role provisioning, job roles and data roles to enforce appropriate Core HR access
  • Build HCM Data Loader templates to load and validate worker, assignment and work structure data
  • Develop OTBI analyses and BI Publisher outputs for Core HR validation and operational reporting
  • Produce a tested Core HR configuration workbook with traceable requirements, setup decisions and test cases

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Gain the ability to diagnose whether a Core HR issue is caused by workforce structure, transaction setup, security or data quality
  • Build credible configuration recommendations using Oracle HCM Cloud setup objects and documented design rationale
  • Create reusable HDL templates and validation reports for safer HR data maintenance
  • Strengthen readiness for Oracle HCM functional consultant, HRIS analyst and Core HR product owner responsibilities
  • Leave with a portfolio-quality configuration workbook and testing artefacts to demonstrate applied capability

For your organisation

  • Establish more consistent legal employer, department, job, position and location structures across the tenant
  • Reduce employee-data errors by using controlled flexfields, action reasons and repeatable HDL loading practices
  • Improve segregation of duties and data privacy through more deliberate role and data-role configuration
  • Shorten the time needed to assess and test Core HR policy changes before production release
  • Increase confidence in HR operational reporting through validated OTBI analyses and BI Publisher outputs

Who should attend

  • HRIS Analysts — who configure and support Oracle HCM Cloud Core HR processes
  • Oracle HCM Cloud Functional Consultants — who translate client HR requirements into tenant configuration
  • HR Systems Managers — who govern Core HR design, releases and operational support
  • HR Operations Managers — who need to standardise employee lifecycle processes and data ownership
  • HCM Product Owners — who prioritise configuration decisions and approve process design
  • Implementation Project Leads — who coordinate Core HR workstreams, testing and deployment readiness

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical exposure to HR processes such as hiring, transfers, promotions, terminations, organisational structures and employee data management. Familiarity with Oracle HCM Cloud navigation, including the Setup and Maintenance work area, is strongly recommended; participants should be able to interpret basic functional requirements and work with spreadsheets. Experience of a Core HR implementation or HRIS support role is useful. No coding, SQL, Oracle database administration or prior HCM Data Loader expertise is required. The course does not assume Payroll, Absence, Talent Management or Recruiting configuration knowledge.

Training methodology

The five-day programme uses short instructor-led configuration briefings followed by guided work in an Oracle HCM Cloud training environment. Participants configure a case-study organisation from enterprise structure through worker transactions, security, data loading and reporting. Exercises require participants to make and justify setup decisions, inspect configuration dependencies, run validation checks and resolve deliberately introduced defects. Small-group design reviews compare alternative approaches to common HR policy requirements. On the final day, participants consolidate their workbook, test scripts and an application plan for a live project or support backlog.

Course outline

  • Business unit configuration and functional ownership boundaries
  • Department hierarchies, organisation trees and reporting relationships
  • Location setup, work sites and address management
  • Reference data sets and set-enabled configuration objects
  • Configuration workbook structure and requirement traceability

Workshop: Participants model the enterprise structure for a multi-entity case organisation and produce the first section of a configuration workbook.

Day 2: Workforce structures and employee lifecycle configuration

  • Job, position, grade, grade ladder and progression configuration
  • Position management versus job-based employment models
  • Worker types, person types and employment relationship concepts
  • Action and action-reason design for worker lifecycle events
  • Assignment attributes, manager changes and organisational transfers
  • Employment information, contracts and seniority date configuration
  • Transaction Design Studio rules for responsive worker transactions

Workshop: Participants configure a hire-to-transfer-to-promotion scenario and produce an action matrix with required fields, approvals and test cases.

  • Descriptive flexfields, extensible flexfields and controlled attribute design
  • Value sets, lookup types and validation strategies
  • Functional security, job roles and duty roles
  • Data security policies and data-role provisioning
  • Role mapping and automatic user-role assignment

Frequently asked questions

You should understand common HR lifecycle processes and be comfortable navigating Oracle HCM Cloud at a basic level. Prior configuration experience is helpful but not essential; the course builds from the Setup and Maintenance work area into advanced Core HR design decisions.

Bring a laptop capable of joining the live online environment or using the classroom training environment. A training tenant is used for exercises, so participants do not need access to their employer's Oracle HCM Cloud instance.

It is designed for HRIS analysts, Oracle HCM functional consultants, HR systems managers and implementation team members working with Core HR. It is not a general HR administration course and assumes interest in configuration rather than end-user transaction processing alone.

This course concentrates on the Core HR foundation: workforce structures, worker records, actions, security, flexfields, data loading and reporting. It does not teach payroll calculation configuration, absence plans, recruiting workflows or talent and performance processes in depth.

You can use the configuration workbook, action matrix, HDL templates and security test matrix to assess a change request or support issue in your own tenant. The methods are intended for practical activities such as adding a department, redesigning transfer actions, loading workers or validating manager access.

You leave with a completed Core HR configuration workbook, sample HCM Data Loader files, reporting examples, security test scenarios and a release-readiness checklist. These artefacts are based on the training case study and can be adapted to your organisation's governance standards.
