Course overview
HR teams often depend on Workday HCM to manage employee data, job changes, organisations, compensation events and workforce reporting, yet inconsistent configuration knowledge can create approval delays, data-quality issues and unnecessary reliance on HRIS specialists. This course equips HR professionals to work confidently within Workday HCM administration processes, understand how configuration choices affect downstream workflows, and communicate requirements clearly when changes need technical support or governance approval.
Participants examine the Workday HCM functional areas most relevant to HR operations: worker and organisational data, staffing models, supervisory organisations, business processes, security roles, notifications, calculated fields and reporting. They learn to navigate the tenant with purpose, interpret business-process steps and conditions, maintain accurate worker records, support common lifecycle transactions, run operational reports, and identify the controls required before making or requesting configuration changes.
Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations with guided practice in a Workday-style training environment, scenario-based troubleshooting and group reviews of HR administration cases. Each participant develops a practical Workday HCM Administration Playbook containing process maps, data-validation checklists, report requirements, security considerations and an action plan for improving one HR workflow in their organisation. Participants receive a certificate on completion.
The course is suited to HR practitioners moving into HR systems responsibilities, HRIS coordinators, shared-services teams and HR managers who need a stronger working knowledge of how Workday HCM supports controlled, reliable people operations.
Course objectives

Target competencies
Who should attend
- HRIS Coordinators — who support Workday transactions, data maintenance and first-line user queries
- HR Administrators — who process employee lifecycle changes and need reliable data and approval controls
- HR Shared Services Specialists — who handle high-volume worker requests and exceptions
- HR Managers — who approve people transactions and need to understand workflow, security and reporting implications
- HR Operations Analysts — who monitor HR process performance and translate operational needs into system requirements
- Payroll or Benefits Administrators — who rely on accurate worker and organisational data from Workday HCM
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand core HR operations such as hiring, job changes, transfers, terminations, manager approvals and employee data maintenance. Familiarity with their organisation’s HR policies, organisational structure and current Workday terminology is helpful. Participants should be comfortable using a web browser, spreadsheets and basic filters; prior experience running Workday reports is useful but not essential. This is a foundation-to-intermediate course, so no programming, Workday implementation experience, integration development or prior configuration certification is required. Complete beginners should expect to learn Workday concepts alongside practical administration workflows.
Training methodology
The instructor uses live Workday HCM demonstrations to connect HR policy decisions with tenant behaviour, then participants complete guided exercises using realistic worker records, organisational changes and approval scenarios. Small groups analyse cases involving stalled transactions, incorrect routing, data-quality exceptions and reporting requests. Participants practise using Workday Report Writer, business-process history and security concepts rather than only discussing them. Daily debriefs convert system activity into HR operating controls, and the final workshop turns a selected workplace process into an actionable administration playbook.
