Course overview
Grain warehouse managers are held accountable for quantity, quality, food safety and dispatch reliability long after grain leaves the farm. A weak intake decision, uncalibrated moisture meter, poor stock rotation rule or delayed pest response can turn a manageable lot into spoilage, infestation, grade claims, rejected deliveries and avoidable financial loss. This course addresses the operational decisions that determine whether a warehouse preserves grain value from receipt through storage, handling and outbound loading.
Participants learn to run a controlled postharvest warehouse operation using documented receiving checks, moisture and temperature monitoring, lot segregation, stack planning, sanitation schedules, fumigation oversight and inventory reconciliation. They work with grain quality specifications; establish sampling and inspection points; calculate dry-matter loss and storage capacity; set trigger limits for corrective action; and investigate stock variances. The programme also covers traceability, supplier and customer documentation, worker safety, pest-control records and practical controls for mold, insects, rodents and cross-contamination.
Instructor-led briefings are paired with warehouse scenarios, calculation drills, document reviews and team-based operational planning. Participants analyse a deteriorating grain stock case, interpret monitoring records, prepare a corrective-action response and build a site-specific postharvest warehouse control plan. They leave with a completed set of adaptable templates: an intake checklist, lot coding and traceability map, monitoring log, sanitation and pest-control schedule, stock-reconciliation worksheet and escalation matrix.
The course is designed for managers responsible for commercial, cooperative, public reserve, humanitarian or agro-processing grain stores. It is equally relevant where warehouses handle maize, wheat, rice, sorghum, barley, pulses or similar dry commodities and need stronger control between procurement, storage and distribution.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in a grain warehouse, silo, store, mill intake area or commodity logistics operation, ideally with responsibility for staff, stock records, quality checks or dispatch. They should understand basic warehouse terms such as lot, batch, stock card, moisture content, FIFO and physical inventory, and be comfortable reading simple tables and performing percentage calculations. Familiarity with a moisture meter, platform scale or warehouse management spreadsheet is helpful but not essential. No prior HACCP qualification, laboratory training, pest-control licence or specialised grain-science degree is required; technical methods are taught in operational terms.
Training methodology
The programme combines instructor-led operational briefings with practical analysis of receiving tickets, moisture and temperature logs, pest-monitoring records, stack maps and stock cards. Participants complete short calculations for capacity, moisture-related risk and inventory variance, then work in groups on a grain-store incident involving infestation, deteriorating quality and dispatch pressure. Facilitated discussions compare control options for flat stores and silos. Each participant closes the week by adapting the course templates into a 90-day warehouse improvement plan for a real or representative site.

Day 1: Grain warehouse control from receipt to release
