Course overview
Receiving errors, misplaced stock, inaccurate bin balances and weak documentation create avoidable cost across a warehouse. A delivery accepted without a proper count or quality check can cause supplier disputes, production shortages and customer service failures days later. This course addresses the day-to-day controls that keep inbound goods traceable from vehicle arrival to put-away, while ensuring stock records reflect the physical warehouse. Participants learn how to establish disciplined receiving, storage, replenishment and count routines that supervisors can monitor and improve.
The course covers goods-in processes, purchase order matching, inspection and discrepancy reporting, barcode identification, location systems, put-away rules, stock rotation and cycle counting. Participants practise using receiving checklists, goods received notes, damage reports, bin-location conventions, stock cards and inventory variance logs. They learn to select storage locations using product characteristics and movement data, apply FIFO and FEFO rules, investigate record-to-physical differences, and measure accuracy through practical warehouse KPIs including dock-to-stock time, inventory accuracy and receiving discrepancy rate.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanations with warehouse scenarios, document-based exercises and spreadsheet analysis. Participants work through a simulated inbound shipment, process exceptions such as shortages and damaged cartons, create a location and put-away plan, and complete a cycle-count investigation. They leave with a completed Warehouse Receiving and Stock Control Action Pack: a receiving process map, inspection checklist, discrepancy log, cycle-count schedule, KPI dashboard template and a 30-day improvement plan suitable for adaptation in their own operation.
The programme is suited to staff entering warehouse operations as well as supervisors and inventory personnel who need a consistent control framework. It is particularly valuable where an organisation is introducing a warehouse management system, tightening inventory accuracy targets or standardising practices across multiple sites or shifts.

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and no previous warehouse qualification is required. Participants should be comfortable with basic arithmetic, reading purchase orders and delivery notes, and using a computer for simple data entry. Familiarity with common warehouse terms such as SKU, pallet, batch, bin location and stock count is helpful but not assumed; these are introduced during the course. A laptop with Microsoft Excel is useful for the practical exercises, particularly online delegates, but advanced spreadsheet skills are not needed. Experience with SAP, Oracle or another warehouse management system is not required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short, applied teaching sessions to introduce each warehouse control, followed by document-based and data-based practice. Participants inspect a simulated delivery against a purchase order, complete a goods received note, classify damaged and short-delivered items, and decide quarantine or acceptance actions. Small groups build a bin-location and put-away plan from product data, then use an Excel stock file to calculate variances and inventory KPIs. The final session converts lessons into a site-specific 30-day action plan, reviewed against realistic operational constraints.

Day 1: Receiving Operations and Inbound Control
- End-to-end inbound flow from booking-in to stock availability
- Roles and handovers at the gatehouse, dock and goods-in area
- Purchase order, advance shipping notice and delivery note matching
- Quantity verification methods for cartons, pallets and loose units
- Goods received note completion and receipt-status controls
- Inbound dock safety, segregation and unloading inspection points
- Receiving KPIs including dock-to-stock time and discrepancy rate
Workshop: Participants process a simulated supplier delivery and produce a completed receiving pack containing matched documents, a goods received note and an exception record.
Day 2: Inspection, Exceptions and Traceability

- Sampling approaches and acceptance criteria for inbound goods
- Shortage, overage, substitution and damage discrepancy classification
- Quarantine, rejection and conditional-acceptance decision rules

Workshop: Participants investigate a mixed-exception shipment and produce a discrepancy report, quarantine label set and supplier claim evidence file.
Day 3: Storage Design, Put-Away and Stock Rotation

- Put-away rules based on product dimensions, weight and compatibility
- ABC movement analysis and fast-moving stock placement
- Slotting principles for travel reduction and safe access

Workshop: Participants create a location coding scheme and put-away plan for a warehouse product profile, including rotation and replenishment rules.
Day 4: Inventory Accuracy and Stock Control

- Stock-card fields and transaction discipline for receipts, issues and transfers

- Inventory accuracy, shrinkage and ageing KPI calculations in Microsoft Excel
Workshop: Participants complete a cycle-count case, reconcile variances in an Excel stock file and produce a root-cause and corrective-action log.
Day 5: Warehouse Control Improvement and Application
