Course overview
Warehouse supervisors are accountable for inventory accuracy, stock availability, labour productivity and safe storage, yet must often manage these outcomes amid delayed receipts, unrecorded movements, damaged stock, location errors and urgent customer orders. This course addresses the practical control gap between system inventory and physical inventory. Participants learn how to identify the sources of discrepancies, establish disciplined transaction processes, direct daily count activity and use warehouse data to prevent recurring losses rather than simply correcting variances after a stocktake.
The programme covers the full inventory-control cycle: receiving verification, put-away discipline, location and slotting controls, barcode-based movements, replenishment triggers, picking confirmation, cycle counting and physical inventory reconciliation. Participants practise ABC classification, count-frequency design, root-cause analysis, inventory accuracy KPIs, variance investigation and corrective-action tracking. They also learn to supervise control points in a warehouse management system, create clear count instructions and coordinate effectively with procurement, transport, customer service and finance when inventory records affect replenishment, billing or customer commitments.
Instruction combines facilitated workshops, warehouse scenarios, Excel-based analysis and demonstrations of WMS processes used in SAP EWM and Oracle WMS Cloud environments. Each participant builds an Inventory Control Improvement Plan for a selected warehouse area, including a baseline KPI dashboard, cycle-count schedule, variance investigation workflow, escalation rules and 30-day actions. This provides both the attendee and their manager with an implementable document for improving stock-record accuracy and reducing preventable operational disruption.
The course is suited to supervisors leading receiving, put-away, replenishment, picking, dispatch or inventory teams, as well as experienced warehouse operatives moving into supervisory responsibility. It is appropriate for organisations operating manual, barcode-enabled or WMS-managed warehouses.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand basic warehouse operations, including receiving, put-away, picking, dispatch and stock locations, and should be comfortable reading simple stock reports. Experience supervising a shift, leading warehouse operatives or performing stock counts is useful but not essential. Participants should be able to use Microsoft Excel for data entry and basic formulas; pivot-table skills are taught during the course. No prior SAP EWM, Oracle WMS Cloud, coding, statistical qualification or formal supply-chain credential is required. Complete beginners can attend, but should expect to learn core warehouse terminology before progressing to control design and variance analysis.
Training methodology
The course uses instructor-led explanations followed by practical warehouse-control exercises. Participants analyse receiving errors, misplaced pallets, short picks and unexplained adjustments using transaction logs and count sheets. Small groups design count schedules, write exception procedures and test root-cause findings against realistic operational evidence. Excel workshops develop an accuracy and variance dashboard, while guided demonstrations connect physical controls to SAP EWM and Oracle WMS Cloud transactions. On the final day, participants convert their findings into a site-specific 30-day Inventory Control Improvement Plan and receive structured instructor feedback.

Day 1: Inventory accuracy foundations and warehouse control points
- Inventory record accuracy versus physical stock accuracy

- Inventory status codes: available, quality hold, damaged and blocked stock
- Warehouse master data: SKUs, units of measure, locations and pack configurations
- Control points in receiving, put-away, replenishment, picking and shipping
- Inventory accuracy, location accuracy and adjustment-rate KPI calculations
- Supervisor accountabilities, segregation of duties and adjustment approval limits
Workshop: Participants map the stock flow for a warehouse scenario and identify the transaction and physical-control failures that could create an inventory discrepancy.
Day 2: Receiving, storage and movement discipline
- Purchase-order receipt verification and discrepancy recording
- Quantity, condition, lot and expiry-date checks at goods-in
- Barcode scanning controls and manual-entry exception procedures
- Put-away confirmation, directed locations and bin-label verification
- Location capacity, mixed-SKU rules and pallet identification standards
- Internal transfers, replenishment moves and stock-status change controls
- GS1 barcode identification principles for warehouse traceability
Workshop: Participants complete a goods-receipt and put-away exception case, producing a receiving checklist and escalation record for damaged, short and unlabelled stock.
Day 3: Cycle counting and physical inventory control
- ABC classification using value, movement frequency and operational risk
- Cycle-count frequency matrices and count-calendar design
- Blind counts, directed counts and opportunistic count methods
- Count preparation: location freeze, count sheets and count-team briefing
- Tolerance rules, recount triggers and inventory adjustment authorisation

Day 4: Variance investigation and performance reporting
