Course overview

Workplace hazards are often identified informally, recorded inconsistently, or assessed without enough evidence to justify controls. This creates gaps between site conditions, legal duties, operational decisions and the risk register. HSE practitioners, supervisors and managers need a repeatable method for identifying credible hazards, evaluating risk, selecting proportionate controls and documenting decisions that can withstand internal review, audits and incident investigation.

This five-day course develops practical workplace HSE risk assessment capability across health, safety and environmental exposures. Participants apply task-based hazard identification, job safety analysis, risk matrices, likelihood and consequence definitions, the hierarchy of controls, residual-risk evaluation and action tracking. The programme addresses routine and non-routine work, contractor activities, change management, environmental aspects and emergency scenarios, using ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 31000 principles to structure decisions.

Instructor-led workshops use realistic operational cases, including maintenance work, chemical handling, work at height, vehicle movements and spill scenarios. Participants practise interviewing task owners, reviewing evidence, facilitating assessment discussions and challenging weak control statements. They leave with a completed risk assessment pack: a scope statement, hazard and control register, scored risk matrix, action plan, consultation record and review schedule that can be adapted for their own workplace.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical exposure to a workplace, operational process, project site or facility where health, safety or environmental controls are used. Experience completing formal risk assessments is not required; the course builds the method from first principles before applying it to complex scenarios. A laptop with spreadsheet access is useful for the workbook exercises, but no specialist HSE software, mathematics beyond basic scoring, or prior ISO auditor qualification is required.

Training methodology

The programme combines focused instructor-led teaching with facilitated assessment workshops. Participants work from photographs, task descriptions, incident extracts, procedures and sample risk registers to identify hazards and test the adequacy of existing controls. Small groups complete job safety analyses, score risks against agreed criteria, debate control options and present their decisions for challenge. The instructor demonstrates how ISO-aligned requirements translate into usable workplace records. Each participant finishes by adapting the assessment pack and implementation actions to a real activity, area or process from their organisation.

Day 2: Hazard identification and task analysis

Day 3: Risk evaluation and control selection

Frequently asked questions

No formal risk assessment qualification or prior experience writing registers is required. You should, however, understand basic workplace HSE terms and have some exposure to operational activities, procedures or controls.
