Course overview
Digital transformation programmes frequently stall after promising pilots because investment decisions, operating-model changes, data ownership and technology delivery are managed as separate initiatives. Senior practitioners need to move beyond a list of digital projects and establish a governed transformation portfolio: one that links strategic outcomes to measurable value, assigns accountable decision rights, manages architecture and data dependencies, and redirects funding when evidence changes. This course addresses the practical challenge of leading transformation across business units, delivery teams, vendors and executive governance forums.
Participants learn to design a transformation strategy that connects enterprise ambition to capability roadmaps, target operating models, technology architecture and investment cases. They apply portfolio prioritisation methods, benefits-realisation frameworks, governance charters, OKRs, digital maturity assessments and risk controls. The course also examines data governance, responsible AI oversight, cybersecurity by design, product-oriented delivery and the management of legacy-modernisation dependencies. Participants practise communicating trade-offs to boards and steering committees using decision-ready dashboards and evidence-based recommendations.
Delivery combines instructor-led strategy sessions with an extended enterprise transformation case. Working in teams, participants diagnose a transformation scenario, define strategic themes, create a prioritised initiative portfolio, establish governance forums and develop measures for value, risk and delivery health. Each participant leaves with a Digital Transformation Governance Blueprint: a practical pack containing a transformation scorecard, target-state roadmap, decision-rights matrix, benefits register and 90-day implementation plan that can be adapted for their organisation.
The course is designed for experienced digital, technology, data and business leaders who contribute to enterprise-wide change, manage transformation portfolios or must govern complex initiatives on behalf of senior stakeholders.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Construct a digital transformation strategy map linking enterprise outcomes, strategic themes, capabilities and measurable OKRs
- Conduct a digital maturity assessment using evidence across customer experience, operations, data, technology and workforce dimensions
- Prioritise a transformation portfolio using value, feasibility, risk, dependency and strategic-alignment criteria
- Design a governance operating model with decision rights, escalation paths, forum mandates and accountable roles
- Build a benefits-realisation register with baselines, benefit owners, leading indicators and validation checkpoints
- Create a target-state roadmap that sequences product, data, architecture and operating-model dependencies
- Apply data governance, responsible AI and cybersecurity controls to transformation initiative design
- Present a board-ready Digital Transformation Governance Blueprint supported by portfolio dashboards and investment recommendations
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for turning broad digital ambitions into an investable, sequenced transformation portfolio
- Build credibility in executive forums by framing transformation choices through value, risk, dependencies and decision rights
- Learn to produce governance artefacts that bridge strategy, architecture, data and delivery disciplines
- Strengthen readiness for roles such as Transformation Director, Digital Strategy Lead, Enterprise Architect or Portfolio Director
- Leave with a personalised governance blueprint and 90-day action plan for immediate use in a live transformation context
For your organisation
- Improves investment decisions by applying transparent prioritisation criteria across competing digital initiatives
- Reduces duplicated technology and data effort by exposing cross-portfolio capability and architecture dependencies
- Creates clearer accountability through defined governance forums, decision rights and escalation mechanisms
- Increases benefits realisation by assigning baselines, owners, leading indicators and validation checkpoints
- Lowers delivery, regulatory and reputational risk by embedding data, AI and cybersecurity governance early in initiative design
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Digital Officers and Digital Transformation Directors — who must convert enterprise ambition into a governed transformation portfolio
- CIOs and IT Directors — who must align technology investment, architecture choices and delivery capacity with business outcomes
- Transformation Programme Directors — who need to coordinate interdependent initiatives, benefits and executive decisions
- Enterprise Architects — who shape target states and must make architecture dependencies visible to investment governance
- Data and AI Leaders — who need to embed data ownership, responsible AI controls and measurable value into transformation plans
- Strategy, PMO and Portfolio Leaders — who manage prioritisation, reporting and governance across strategic change initiatives
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience contributing to digital, technology, data, operational-change or transformation initiatives, ideally with exposure to business cases, programme governance, portfolio reporting or enterprise architecture. The course assumes familiarity with concepts such as KPIs, project and programme lifecycle, stakeholder management, risk registers and basic cloud, data or application-modernisation terminology. Experience with Power BI, Jira Align or architecture modelling tools is helpful but not essential; templates and guided examples are provided. Coding, data science, formal TOGAF certification and prior board-level experience are not required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short, expert-led briefings to introduce each framework, followed by facilitated application to a realistic enterprise transformation case. Participants work with maturity-assessment prompts, portfolio scoring sheets, governance-charter templates, dependency maps and benefits registers rather than abstract discussion alone. Teams test competing investment choices, prepare steering-committee decisions and receive instructor feedback on their governance design. Individual end-of-course application planning converts the case learning into a 90-day plan, tailored blueprint and stakeholder engagement approach for each participant’s organisation.
