Course overview

Digital transformation initiatives often stall because teams digitise fragmented, poorly understood processes rather than redesigning how work should flow across people, systems, data and decisions. Analysts, process owners and transformation leads need a shared way to expose hand-offs, rework loops, manual controls, system gaps and automation candidates before committing budget to platforms, RPA or workflow development. BPMN 2.0 provides that common language, but value comes from using it to make defensible redesign choices rather than producing diagrams alone.

This five-day course teaches participants to model current-state and future-state processes in BPMN 2.0, then use the models to shape digital transformation requirements. Participants practise pools, lanes, events, gateways, tasks, subprocesses, message flows, error handling and boundary events. They learn to distinguish orchestration from collaboration, identify process measures and pain points, define business rules, assess automation suitability, and translate a redesigned BPMN model into requirements for workflow, case management, integration and RPA teams.

Instruction combines expert demonstrations, guided modelling, peer reviews and a sustained transformation case study. Working in teams, participants model an end-to-end service process, diagnose its operational weaknesses, produce a redesigned target process, and document prioritised digital change requirements. Each participant leaves with a BPMN redesign pack containing current-state and future-state diagrams, an automation opportunity assessment, a process KPI set, a stakeholder review checklist and a 90-day application plan.

Participants work from an operational case study through current-state capture, issue analysis, target-process redesign and technology requirement definition. Facilitated reviews test diagram clarity, BPMN correctness and the business rationale for each change. Small-group workshops simulate process-owner and delivery-team discussions, including challenge of automation assumptions. The final session is an application-planning clinic in which participants adapt the redesign pack and review approach to a live process from their organisation.

Day 2: Diagnosing process performance and control gaps

  • Boundary events for timer, error, escalation and message conditions
  • Rework loops, bottlenecks and hand-off analysis

Workshop: Participants annotate their current-state model with pain points, measures, failure modes and evidence for the three highest-priority redesign opportunities.

Day 3: Designing the digital future state

Workshop: Teams redesign the case process as a target-state BPMN model and produce an automation decision log for each changed activity.

Day 4: From BPMN model to delivery requirements

  • Business rules and decision tables using DMN concepts

Workshop: Participants create a delivery handover pack containing a BPMN target model, requirement statements, acceptance criteria and an exception-control matrix.

Day 5: Governance, prioritisation and workplace application
