Course overview
Chief Digital Officers are expected to turn digital strategy into measurable business change while controlling investment, technology risk, data exposure, supplier dependence, and delivery fragmentation. The challenge is not selecting another platform or approving isolated innovation pilots; it is establishing decision rights, portfolio controls, architecture guardrails, and performance measures that allow business units to move quickly without creating duplicate capabilities or unmanaged risk. This course addresses the governance gap between executive intent and repeatable digital execution.
Participants learn to design a digital governance operating model that connects corporate strategy, product portfolios, enterprise architecture, data governance, cybersecurity, finance, and delivery teams. They practise defining a transformation mandate, governance forums, escalation paths, RACI matrices, investment-stage gates, benefits-realisation measures, and executive dashboards. The course applies COBIT 2019, TOGAF concepts, ArchiMate viewpoints, and Power BI reporting patterns to decisions a CDO must make: which initiatives proceed, who owns outcomes, when exceptions are justified, and how value is evidenced.
Instruction combines executive briefings, governance design workshops, peer review, and a running transformation case involving a multi-business organisation with competing digital initiatives. Participants build a board-ready Digital Transformation Governance Blueprint containing a target operating model, decision-rights map, portfolio scorecard, KPI set, governance calendar, and 90-day implementation plan. This is an intermediate course for leaders who already work with digital programmes and need a defensible structure for directing them across business and technology boundaries.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design a digital transformation governance operating model with defined forums, mandates, decision rights, and escalation routes
- Create a RACI matrix that assigns accountability for strategy, architecture, data, cybersecurity, investment, and benefits realisation
- Apply COBIT 2019 governance objectives to assess control gaps in a transformation portfolio
- Build a portfolio prioritisation scorecard using strategic alignment, value, risk, dependency, and delivery-readiness criteria
- Define stage-gate decisions and evidence requirements for discovery, pilot, scale, and benefits-realisation phases
- Develop a transformation KPI hierarchy linking executive outcomes, product measures, delivery metrics, and risk indicators
- Model architecture and capability dependencies using TOGAF concepts and ArchiMate viewpoints
- Produce a board-ready Digital Transformation Governance Blueprint and 90-day mobilisation plan
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for converting a broad digital mandate into clear executive decision rights and governance routines
- Build credibility with boards and executive committees by presenting investment choices through value, risk, dependency, and benefits evidence
- Strengthen authority in cross-functional negotiations with business-unit leaders, CIOs, finance teams, architects, and suppliers
- Create a practical governance blueprint that can be adapted for a current transformation portfolio or new CDO mandate
- Demonstrate leadership capability in enterprise operating-model design, portfolio governance, and benefits realisation
For your organisation
- Reduces duplicated digital initiatives by introducing common portfolio intake, prioritisation, and architecture review criteria
- Improves investment decisions through consistent value cases, stage gates, dependency analysis, and benefits tracking
- Clarifies accountability across business, technology, data, cyber, finance, and delivery functions
- Identifies control gaps before pilots scale into costly platforms, suppliers, or operating commitments
- Provides an actionable governance blueprint and 90-day mobilisation plan for strengthening transformation oversight
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Digital Officers — who must establish enterprise-wide authority and controls for digital investment and delivery
- Deputy Chief Digital Officers — who translate the CDO mandate into governance forums, portfolio practices, and operating routines
- Chief Information Officers — who must align technology governance with business-led digital transformation
- Digital Transformation Directors — who coordinate programmes across products, functions, suppliers, and change teams
- Enterprise Architecture Leaders — who need to connect architecture guardrails to investment and portfolio decisions
- PMO and Transformation Office Heads — who must report delivery, benefits, dependencies, and exceptions to executive sponsors
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience leading, sponsoring, governing, or supporting digital initiatives, technology portfolios, transformation programmes, product organisations, or enterprise architecture work. Familiarity with business cases, programme governance, KPIs, risk registers, and executive steering committees is assumed. Participants should be able to interpret a simple portfolio dashboard and discuss organisational decision making across business and IT. Prior use of COBIT, TOGAF, ArchiMate, or Power BI is helpful but not required; templates and guided examples are provided. No coding, data modelling, or specialist cybersecurity certification is required.
Training methodology
The course uses instructor-led executive sessions to introduce governance patterns, followed by structured workshops using a single transformation case. Participants diagnose fragmented decision rights, score competing initiatives, define stage gates, map dependencies, and design governance forums with named accountabilities. Small groups critique each other’s RACI matrices, KPI trees, and board-reporting packs against COBIT 2019 and TOGAF-informed criteria. Each day adds a component to the participant’s Digital Transformation Governance Blueprint, culminating in a facilitated executive review and a 90-day implementation plan for their own organisation.
