Course overview
Sales objections often surface late because the seller has not established the buyer’s real pain, decision process, budget position or willingness to act. Reps then default to defending price, adding concessions, sending proposals too early or attempting to “overcome” objections with product features. This course equips sales professionals to use the Sandler Selling System to prevent predictable objections before they arise and handle genuine resistance without becoming argumentative, discount-led or overly eager to close.
Participants learn the Sandler Submarine framework and apply its core elements to objection-prone sales conversations: Bonding and Rapport, Up-Front Contracts, Pain, Budget, Decision, Fulfillment and Post-Sell. They practise the Pain Funnel, Negative Reverse Selling, reverses, clarification questions and strategic silence to distinguish a real concern from a stall, brush-off or unqualified opportunity. The course also covers how to respond to price, competitor, timing, authority, implementation and “send me information” objections while maintaining control of the sales process.
Instruction combines facilitator demonstrations, recorded-call analysis, structured role plays and peer coaching using participants’ own accounts or realistic B2B sales cases. Each participant builds an objection-handling playbook containing qualification questions, Sandler-compatible response paths, Up-Front Contract language, account-specific risk signals and follow-up actions. They leave with a practical conversation plan for an active opportunity, a documented approach for preventing late-stage objections and a certificate on completion.
The programme is suited to business development, account management and sales leadership professionals who sell consultatively in B2B, complex, technical, professional-services or high-value environments. It is appropriate for newer sellers learning a repeatable method and experienced sellers seeking to replace reactive objection handling with disciplined qualification and mutual-commitment conversations.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply the Sandler Submarine framework to diagnose where objections originate in a sales conversation
- Create Up-Front Contracts that establish agenda, outcomes, time limits and next-step commitments
- Use the Pain Funnel to uncover business impact, personal impact and urgency behind stated needs
- Differentiate true objections from stalls, brush-offs, conditions and unqualified buyer concerns
- Practise Negative Reverse Selling responses for price, timing, competitor and authority objections
- Conduct Budget and Decision discussions that reveal financial parameters and buying-process risks
- Build an account-specific objection-handling playbook with questions, response paths and follow-up actions
- Prepare a post-sell conversation plan that reduces buyer remorse, ghosting and late-stage deal reversal
Benefits of attending
For you
- Handle price pressure without immediately discounting or defending product features
- Gain a repeatable language framework for difficult buyer conversations and stalled deals
- Produce evidence-based qualification notes that make opportunity decisions easier to defend
- Improve credibility with managers by identifying deal risk before forecast commitments are made
- Build confidence in challenging buyer assumptions while preserving rapport and professionalism
For your organisation
- Reduce time spent pursuing low-probability opportunities that lack pain, budget or a decision path
- Improve forecast quality through earlier identification of authority, timing and commitment risks
- Protect margin by replacing reflexive discounting with structured price and value conversations
- Create more consistent discovery and objection-handling standards across the sales team
- Strengthen sales-manager coaching with observable Sandler behaviours and documented account action plans
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Business Development Representatives — who need to qualify early-stage opportunities before investing sales resources
- Account Executives — who must manage objections and maintain momentum in multi-stage B2B deals
- Sales Representatives — who face price, timing and competitor objections during prospect conversations
- Key Account Managers — who need to challenge assumptions and secure commitments from existing customers
- Sales Managers — who coach sellers on discovery quality, pipeline risk and objection handling
- Customer Success Managers — who manage renewal resistance and must uncover adoption or value concerns
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have basic experience of customer-facing sales conversations, such as prospecting calls, discovery meetings, demonstrations, proposal discussions or account reviews. They should understand their organisation’s offer, typical buyer roles, sales cycle and common objections well enough to bring one live or recent opportunity to class. Familiarity with a CRM such as Salesforce Sales Cloud or HubSpot CRM is useful for applying follow-up plans, but no advanced system configuration is required. This is a foundation-to-intermediate course: no prior Sandler training, formal sales qualification or negotiation certification is required. Complete beginners should expect intensive role-play practice and should review their product or service before attending.
Training methodology
The instructor introduces each Sandler method through live modelling, annotated call excerpts and short sales-case discussions before participants practise it in progressively more demanding role plays. Teams work with buyer briefs containing hidden pain, budget, authority and timing issues, then observe and score conversations against Sandler behaviours. Participants rehearse wording for their own common objections, receive facilitator and peer feedback, and revise their approach. The final day uses an active-account application workshop to convert learning into a documented objection-handling and next-conversation plan.
Course outline
Day 1: Sandler foundations and objection prevention
- The Sandler Submarine framework and buyer-seller dynamics
- The Sandler philosophy of equal business stature
- The three buyer concerns: pain, budget and decision
- Bonding and Rapport without premature product pitching
- Buyer resistance patterns and the reasons objections emerge late
- The Sandler Rules that govern qualification and commitment
- Mapping common objections to missed discovery stages
Workshop: Participants map a recent lost or stalled opportunity against the Sandler Submarine and identify the missed conversation that allowed the objection to develop.
Day 2: Up-Front Contracts and pain discovery
- Up-Front Contract components: purpose, agenda, timing and outcomes
- Permission-based questions and equal-footing conversation control
- The Pain Funnel sequence from surface issue to business impact
- Clarifying emotional, operational and financial consequences
- Strategic silence, paraphrasing and confirmation questions
- Identifying compelling reasons to change versus general interest
- Securing a mutually agreed next step after discovery
Workshop: In paired discovery role plays, participants create and deliver an Up-Front Contract and produce a written Pain Funnel summary for a buyer case.
Day 3: Handling resistance without defensiveness
- Classifying objections, stalls, brush-offs and conditions
- The Negative Reverse Selling method and appropriate use cases
- Reverses that return ownership of the concern to the buyer
- Clarification questions for vague or contradictory objections
- Handling the “send me information” request without premature follow-up
- Responding to price objections before discussing discounts
- Using tone, pace and silence to avoid defensive selling
Workshop: Participants complete a rotating objection clinic and produce tested response paths for five objections drawn from their own sales environment.
Day 4: Budget, decision and competitive objections
- Budget conversations that test financial capacity and priority
- Decision-process mapping for roles, criteria, approvals and timing
- Identifying non-decision makers and hidden stakeholders
- Competitor objections and the danger of feature-by-feature comparison
- Testing urgency when buyers cite timing or internal priorities
- Qualification language for authority, implementation and procurement constraints
- Recording objection evidence and next actions in CRM opportunity notes
Workshop: Teams analyse a complex account case, build a Budget and Decision map, and present a risk-based plan for addressing its stated objections.
Day 5: Post-sell assurance and field application
- The Fulfillment step and presenting only after qualification
- Using a Post-Sell conversation to surface buyer remorse early
- Confirming commitments, responsibilities and implementation expectations
- Recognising ghosting, rescinding and late-stage reversal signals
- Creating account-specific objection prevention plans
- Sales-manager coaching questions for Sandler call reviews
- Personal application planning and measurable field commitments
Workshop: Each participant conducts a capstone role play for an active opportunity and completes an objection-handling playbook with a 30-day field application plan.
