Course overview

HSE leaders need more than incident totals and overdue-action lists: they need reporting that exposes where risk is increasing, which controls are failing, and where intervention will have the greatest operational effect. This course addresses the common gap between data held in VelocityEHS and the dashboards used in management meetings. Participants learn to convert incident, inspection, audit, corrective-action, training, environmental and occupational health data into decision-ready reporting for frontline supervisors, site leaders and executive stakeholders.

The course covers dashboard requirements gathering, metric definitions, source-data assessment, report filtering, trend analysis, calculated measures, chart selection and audience-specific dashboard layouts in VelocityEHS. Participants practise designing leading and lagging indicator views; comparing sites, departments and contractors; analysing incident severity and corrective-action ageing; and building environmental performance views. They also learn how to apply data-quality checks, define reporting governance and document each metric so reports remain trusted after deployment.

Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by guided configuration exercises using realistic HSE scenarios and sample VelocityEHS data. Teams critique dashboard prototypes against management questions, investigate misleading visualisations and refine reports for different user groups. Each participant leaves with a dashboard design pack containing a reporting requirements matrix, KPI dictionary, wireframe layouts, filter logic, governance rules and a 90-day implementation plan for an identified business reporting need.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have working experience with HSE processes such as incident reporting, inspections, audits, corrective actions, risk assessments or environmental data collection, and should understand common measures such as TRIR, lost-time cases, overdue actions and completion rates. Familiarity with navigating their organisation’s VelocityEHS environment and exporting or reviewing reports is strongly recommended. Participants should be able to work confidently with spreadsheet tables and basic percentages. Prior dashboard-design experience, programming, SQL, Power BI development or VelocityEHS system-administrator certification is not required. Bringing examples of current management reports is encouraged.

Training methodology

The five-day programme combines focused instructor demonstrations in VelocityEHS with individual report-building exercises, facilitated dashboard critiques and small-group HSE case studies. Participants work from business questions to measures, source fields, filters and visual layouts rather than starting with charts. Exercises use incident, inspection, corrective-action and environmental datasets to test trend and comparison logic. On the final day, each participant applies the method to a workplace reporting need and receives structured feedback on their dashboard design pack and implementation plan.

Day 1: Reporting strategy and HSE dashboard requirements

Day 2: Metric definition and reporting data quality

Workshop: Participants audit a sample HSE dataset, identify reporting defects and produce a KPI dictionary for six priority management measures.

Day 3: VelocityEHS report building and analytical logic

Frequently asked questions

No. Participants should be comfortable navigating VelocityEHS and understand the HSE records used by their organisation, but administrator certification is not required. The course focuses on reporting design, analytical logic and governed dashboard requirements rather than platform installation or user administration.

A laptop is recommended for live online delivery and useful in the classroom for working on templates and exercises. Training exercises use sample data, so production-system access is not essential; however, bringing non-confidential examples of current reports will help you apply the methods to your organisation.

It is best suited to HSE managers, analysts, safety managers, environmental managers and EHS systems owners responsible for producing or improving management reporting. It is not primarily a course on incident investigation, risk assessment facilitation or general VelocityEHS navigation.
