Course overview

Environmental managers and internal auditors need more than awareness of ISO 14001:2015: they must be able to test whether an environmental management system (EMS) is operating as intended, identify evidence-based nonconformities, and report findings that management can act on. Poorly planned audits can miss significant environmental aspects, legal compliance gaps, weak operational controls, and failures to close corrective actions. This five-day course develops the practical audit discipline required to evaluate an EMS with confidence and consistency.

Participants work through the ISO 14001:2015 requirements alongside ISO 19011:2018 auditing guidance, learning how to define audit objectives, assess risks and opportunities, prepare audit plans, build process-based checklists, conduct interviews, sample records, and evaluate objective evidence. The course gives particular attention to environmental aspects and impacts, compliance obligations, operational planning and control, emergency preparedness, performance evaluation, nonconformity classification, and corrective-action verification. Participants learn to distinguish an observation from a nonconformity and to write findings against clear audit criteria.

Instructor-led sessions are combined with document reviews, role-play interviews, audit-trail exercises, group analysis of an EMS case study, and reporting workshops. Each participant produces a usable internal audit pack: an audit programme, audit plan, tailored checklist, evidence record, findings log, and corrective-action follow-up framework. They also receive a certificate on completion. Delivered over five days in a classroom or live online setting, the course is designed for professionals progressing from foundation knowledge to capable participation in ISO 14001 internal audits.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret ISO 14001:2015 clauses as auditable criteria for an environmental management system
  • Apply ISO 19011:2018 principles to plan, conduct and report internal EMS audits
  • Develop a risk-based annual internal audit programme linked to environmental aspects, compliance obligations and organisational priorities
  • Prepare a process-based audit plan, checklist and sampling strategy for a defined EMS area
  • Conduct audit interviews using open questions, evidence trails and effective note-taking methods
  • Evaluate objective evidence to determine conformity, nonconformity, observation or improvement opportunity
  • Write clear nonconformity statements that cite audit criteria, factual evidence and the unmet requirement
  • Verify corrective-action effectiveness and produce an auditable follow-up record for management review

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Build the practical evidence-gathering skills needed to contribute credibly to ISO 14001 internal audits
  • Create audit plans and checklists that can be adapted directly to your own site or EMS processes
  • Gain confidence challenging weak records, unclear controls and unsupported compliance claims during audit interviews
  • Strengthen your suitability for environmental auditor, EMS coordinator and HSE assurance responsibilities
  • Leave with a documented audit pack that demonstrates your ability to plan, record and report an EMS audit

For your organisation

  • Improve the quality and consistency of internal audits across environmental processes, sites and departments
  • Identify gaps in aspect controls, legal compliance evaluation and emergency preparedness before external audits or incidents
  • Produce clearer nonconformity reports that enable process owners to target root causes and corrective actions
  • Strengthen management review inputs through more reliable audit findings, trends and follow-up evidence
  • Reduce dependence on external consultants by developing in-house ISO 14001 audit capability

Who should attend

  • Environmental Managers — who need to assure EMS performance and prepare reliable evidence for certification audits
  • Internal Auditors — who need a structured method for auditing ISO 14001 processes and controls
  • HSE Managers — who oversee environmental risk, legal compliance and corrective-action governance
  • EMS Coordinators — who maintain ISO 14001 documentation and coordinate internal audit programmes
  • Compliance Officers — who must test whether environmental obligations are identified, controlled and evaluated
  • Operations and Facilities Managers — who own site controls, waste, emissions and emergency arrangements subject to audit

Requirements and prerequisites

This course is suitable for participants with basic workplace familiarity with environmental management or ISO management systems. Participants should understand common terms such as environmental aspect, impact, compliance obligation, objective, operational control and corrective action, although these concepts are refreshed during the course. Experience working within an EMS, HSE function, facilities operation or compliance role is useful but not mandatory. Participants should be able to read procedures, records and simple process maps. No previous auditing qualification, lead auditor training, specialist environmental degree or audit software is required. Complete beginners should expect a demanding but supported introduction to both ISO 14001 requirements and internal audit practice.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led explanations of ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 19011:2018, followed by practical audit work against a realistic EMS case file. Participants review an aspect register, legal compliance records, operational procedures, incident records and performance data; plan audit trails; and conduct role-play opening meetings and interviews. Small groups compare evidence, classify findings and defend conclusions against clause requirements. Daily outputs are progressively assembled into an individual audit pack, culminating in a closing-meeting presentation and a job-based action plan for the participant's next internal audit.

Frequently asked questions

No previous audit qualification or audit experience is required. Basic familiarity with environmental management, workplace procedures or HSE responsibilities will help, and the course introduces the audit process step by step.

A laptop is useful for completing templates and reviewing digital case-study materials in live online delivery, but it is not essential for classroom attendance. Participants may bring a non-confidential procedure, audit checklist or aspect register from their workplace to adapt during application planning.

It is designed for environmental managers, HSE professionals, EMS coordinators, compliance staff and operational managers who will conduct or support first-party EMS audits. It also suits technical specialists nominated as subject-matter auditors for specific environmental processes.

Implementation training focuses on building or maintaining an EMS, while this course concentrates on testing whether that system is working through internal audit. It provides more practical internal-audit planning, interviewing, evidence evaluation and corrective-action follow-up than a general ISO 14001 awareness course.

You can use the audit programme, plan, checklist, evidence record and findings templates developed during the course for your next internal audit. The method applies directly to processes such as waste management, chemical control, emissions monitoring, environmental incident response and legal compliance evaluation.

You leave with a completed internal EMS audit pack based on the course case study, including an audit programme, audit plan, checklist, evidence notes, findings log and corrective-action follow-up framework. You also receive a certificate on completion and a 90-day workplace application plan.
